3.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Yuengling long existed as a regional brewer, but in 1987, they re-introduced Traditional Lager, which has become their flagship brand, usually just called "Lager."
To put this beer in perspective, it’s really not a "craft beer," nor is it intended to be. It uses adjunct and would fall in line with macro swill on the profile scale, checking in at 4.6 percent ABV, 142 calories and only around 13-15 IBUs. It IS, however, a far cry from typical domestic crap.
Yuengling has a nice copper color, as they do throw a little caramalt in the mash. There’s a hint of sweetness in the nose and a slight caramel aroma lingers as it rolls down the gullet. Surprisingly, it has pretty good body for an American lager. It finishes clean with only the faintest whiff of any hop content. It gives a sense of a classic European lager, but without the fuller mouthfeel or protein body of the continental 2-row malt. It actually reminds me a bit of the pre-takeover Stroh’s when it was caramelized in the direct fire kettle, but with a little more body. It does have flavor, however, and that is not the norm for the typical "big brewer" product.
Regardless, this is a wonderful session brew for a large American brewery and a domestic lager, particularly in the cold longneck bottle on a warm summer day.

2.6 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
12 fl oz bottle. Pours a clear amber with a light beige head. Sweet dusty malt notes, white bread, and a light mineral scent on the nose. As for taste, more body on the palate than I was expecting, but sweet with caramel, domestic beer notes galore, into a taste that makes me think of the smell of pencils, VERY light bitterness, and some orange pekoe in the finish. Not awful, but too sweet for a return visit, and tastes far too much like a domestic lager to get excited about.

This beer is a lager. It’s not meant to be special. It’s meant to be your every day beer. For that purpose it is one of the best in the world, in my opinion. Many people expect something exotic now that it has reached the vast reached of the USA. Others feel it has the watered down effect of mass production. Those are the same people who think every microbrew is a good beer. Actually, most american microbrews are mediocre at best but continue to receive inflated opinions by naive drinkers who dont know better. This beer, however, is an American legend for serving as the best plain ’old lager in the country.

had this on draft in NY...unremarkable but not bad in any way. i’d say it’s your average session lager for those not wanting to branch out and try new styles."
