HogTownHarry (3922), Toronto (Harbourfront), Ontario, Canada Mar 7, 2006 Updated: Mar 11, 2006Bottle (1000 ml). Shared with blankboy and Dave B, blankboy’s bottle via Presario. Poured deep opaque black, huge lasting foamy-creamy tan head. Hind-brain appealing aroma of deeply bitter espresso grounds, peat, dirt, mould, dry leafy hops, some pungent, acidic, with an almost sulfury cabbage-smell; hella-roasted! Flavour is almost disappointing - weak, watery roast coffee, chocolate, a bit of cream, bitter celery - nice, but needs more oomph. Mouthfeel is creamy, light bodied, acidic - okay; has a medium-long earthy, bitter finish: celery? beetroot? Dave said parsnips???? DuffMan (2723), the land of bitumen, beef & beer, Alberta, Canada Mar 4, 2006 Massive 1L bottle. This beer is black, with a suggestion of being brown at the edges. No real head. BIG coffee aroma, but vegemite and toast as well. Interesting palate dominated by coffee, but also with some peppery (capsicum) vegetable notes, chocolate, and molasses. Creamy mouthfeel, low carbonation, bitter finish. Big, bold, and fantastic-- luxurious even! TaktikMTL (2749), Montréal-Nord, Quebec, Canada Jan 28, 2006 Bouteille de 1 l obtenue via Importations Privées Bièropholie. Arôme: Odeur de café torréfié. Apparence: Couleur noire opaque. (Rating #429) hobgoblin (163), St-Épiphane, Quebec, Canada Jan 11, 2006 Bottle. Deep blac color with tan head. Coffee, coffee, coffee and malt aroma. Taste is mostly coffee and malt but like Siroy said, after one liter it comes alittle boring but i drank it all myself and it was pleasant.
11026 (1799), Alabama, USA Jan 2, 2006 Bottle sampled at Seattle gathering courtesy of Pitonka? Deep brown colored with a nice tan head. Good lacing. Rich mocha aroma. Medium bodied and smooth. Flavors run the same as aroma. Nicely done. muzzlehatch (4427), Burlington, Vermont, USA Dec 31, 2005 From 1 liter bottle at the Montreal YeHa! 2005. Black with little head, deep and opaque....burnt coffee grounds in the assertive nose, sharp bitter and dry, this a sweet stout?....but in the body, the burnt characteristics are lovingly balance by sweet molasses and maple, and the coffee is smooth and enervating rather than harsh...gorgeous and delectable. Siroy (220), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Dec 17, 2005 [Bottle 1 liter, dates unknown, room temp]
I had high expectations for this. Pours a deep dark brown/black.. thin brownish head with medium retention. When it comes to aroma, you understand rapidly what an ‘Espresso Stout’ is. Definitely smells acidic/roasted coffee beans. No real chocolate traces. Taste is not up to scratch.. watery in fact. The attack is pretty weak for a stout, even a sweet; you get to wait a little to get a shy development of coffee. Light but creamy body, soft carbonation, medium to long finish. It’s a fine beer after all, but 1 liter could get a little boring, (still, i had it all) BückDich (4793), McCall, Idaho, USA Dec 7, 2005 Sampled at Oakes’ ’05 Xmas Party Dark mahogany, tan head, light lacing. Nose of powdered wood, old stale and lightly roasted Robusta. Light vanilla and roast in the flavor but it’s just so dry. There’s a glass full of liquid in front of me but it dehydrates me to drink it. More of a greasy feel and a balanced roasted note in the finish. Coffee beers usually hit my B-spot but not this one.
