scraff (1920), Baltimore, Maryland, USA Aug 22, 2007 Black, tan fizzy head. Nose was full of wet espresso ground notes and hints of MilkyWay bars. Dark roasted coffee flavors fade into chalky bitter chocolate tones. Light bodied, moderate carbonation, lightly bittersweet finish. Not bad if you want a caffeine buzz. Thanks for sharing kmweaver... kmweaver (2396), Sebastopol, California, USA Aug 13, 2007 1L bottle, courtesy of presario. Thanks, Trevor! Pours a dark brown color; cocoa-colored head with patchy lacing. Dense, well-roasted coffee and baker’s chocolate in the aroma. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: coffee and bitter chocolate; very well-roasted; drinkable, filled-out stout. Medium, dry chocolate and roasted coffee finish. argo0 (6842), Washington DC, USA Aug 10, 2007 (1L, thanks kmweaver) Brown head atop black body. Aroma is medium sweet, cocoa, coffee. Taste is medium sweet, coffee/roast, light chocolate. Medium body, light acidity. mj (4971), Colorado, USA Aug 10, 2007 Sampled from a 1L bottle thanks to kmweaver. Nose is full of dark roast coffee, bitter bakers chocolate and some greenish bell pepper and seed scents as well. Creamy texture up front, while the middle is somewhat acidic or lactic, and slightly pasty as well. Has some residual green vegetal mocha notes with some bitter chocolate in the finish. A weird stout. oakbluff (298), Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada Jul 29, 2007 Appearance- very dark stout pours with a nice head. The nose is chocolate with a hint of coffee- surprising as I was expecting strong coffee smell. Taste- good roast flavours, and just like the smell, the espresso is subdued initially. May be because beer is too cold. Carbonation level is appropriate for the style. As get more into the beer, the espresso taste begins to develp more. Its probably a good thing that it was initially subdued. Mouthfeel is average for a stout. Great bottle as well- will be good for homebrew (1 litre flip top). Overall good effort. french tickler (642), Aylmer, Quebec, Canada Jun 17, 2007 Pitch black poor, lively effervescent with a beige foamy head.. No lacing. Aromas of coffee, chocolate mousse, hints of vanilla, chocolate milkshake, nutmegg and egg nog. Creamy mouthfeel, lightly bitter but long lasting.... Dry finish. Slightly to carbonated and almost feels a little to watered down. Coffee amd dark chocolate hits you right off the bat...... that’s about it. ChainGangGuy (2522), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA Jun 7, 2007 Updated: May 23, 2008Appearance: Pours out a deep black with a thinnish brown-colored head.
Smell: The sharp scent of stale coffee grounds is harshly acidic and unpleasant. Not at all like the aroma of freshly ground espresso.
Taste: Acutely bitter taste accentuated by a firm, acidic black malt flavor. Slight hints of wood and anise barely avoid being washed out by the acrid stale coffee bite. Exceedingly ashy tasting.
Mouthfeel: Medium-thin body. Slightly oily texture, and low carbonation.
Drinkability: Far too ashy to be enjoyable. Lacks the balancing sweetness and creaminess, which it desperately requires. // Appearance: Pours a black body with a full, frothy, ecru-colored head.
Smell: Dark malts and dry dark chocolate set against a backdrop of clean-smelling espresso.
Taste: Dark maltiness tasting of dark baker’s chocolate. Splash of mountain spring water. Then comes the espresso that’s, thankfully, not accompanied by any harsh, acidic, burnt, or ash hints to detract from it. Toast topped with a sprinkling of table sugar, though there’s never more than a mild sweetness throughout. Slight bitterness. Plenty of clean-tasting espresso on the finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation.
Drinkability: It’s good. A VAST improvement over the previous tasting of this beer. Vac (2389), San Diego, California, USA Apr 1, 2007 Pours wtih a dark brown to black body toped by a light brown, medium thick head with a good amount of lacing. It’s slightly sweet and roasty wtih nice coffee notes and a touch of bitterness. Full bodied, smooth and a touch dry.
