   AROMA 8/10   APPEARANCE 4/5   TASTE 8/10   PALATE 3/5   OVERALL 14/20
TAR (2518) - Lafayette, Colorado, USA - SEP 10, 2014
Bottle consumed at the brewery in Aug. 2014: Polished blonde. Creamy but nonuniform white head. Bright nose of honeysuckle, minerals, lemon cake and piecrust. Soft pinpricks of creamy carbonation. The stiffly minerally and immaculately clean body is bolstered by a weighty undertow of well-textured baguette malt kissed with delicately sweet residual sugars evocative of chef-grade frosting. Pervasive hop-driven luster perpetuates the clean snappiness. Lemony acids and vibrant hop oils contribute much elegance as they continuously sparkle. Alcohol lends a gentle scratch, but is well hidden, as are the sugars. Finishes notably dry, yet well layered with profuse haylike starches and vanilla cake alongside a malt-tempering kiss of flowers and lemon. It’s impressive to find this kind of malt detail and depth in something so clean and quaffable. Not at all punishingly sweet and alcoholic as many heller bocks can be, which testifies to the incredible talent of Stefan, the head brewer. Mouthfeel is a tad flimsy, but this is another solid creation from Zehendner, one of Franconia’s "cleanest" breweries.

Bottle at the brewery shared by Stefan Zehendner. Appearance is clear, sparkling with a full head.
Slightly oxidized in the bottle with faint paper / dust notes behind the core of honey-melanoidin malt and lemon juice hops. Strong mineral character. Hoppy and crisp in the mouth, with mild acidic to balance sugars. Some faint apple and banana ester on the edge of baked bread / toast core. Medium-full body, savory and oily and chewy.

My Bottom Line:
Herbal hops and light hay-like pils malts evolve in a dryish mouthfeel laced in alcohol warmth and balancing bitterness.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A frothy head of foam stays atop the misty straw blond.
-I don’t understand why alcohol warmth needs to be present here.
-Flavor profile could be a tad more characterful to my tastes.
-I don’t understand the need to drink this one when you have access to their splendid Lagerbier. The latter has more flavour and more drinkability.
-The effervescent mouthfeel is very enjoyable.

On tap at Ma Che Siete, Roma.

On tap at Cafe Abseits, Bamberg, 4/5/2014. Slightly hazy and gold in colour, with a decent white head and a touch of carbonation. Sweetish, floral lager, with some crisp malts and well concealed alcohol. Pleasant.

Bottle 0.5l. Pours almost clear yellow orange with white head. Aroma is geainy, malty, grassy with a spicy note. Taste is medium sweet and bitter with malt and hop flavour. Aftertaste has some bitterness with a spicy touch. Alcohol is well hidden, medium carbonation. Good Bock.

Bottle kindly given to me by Gerhard at Café Abseits in Bamberg. Slightly hazy golden/orange with a lasting thick cream head. Looks really carbonated, I may have to decant this to get some of the gas out of it. Slightly perfumed aroma. Good light bock but with a definite alcohol punch. Some hop, I know it’s called a Maibock, but it does actually taste of May. Like May blossom. Really drinkable. Alcohol is hidden well. Yep really tasty.

Draught @ Cafe Abseits. Pours hazy golden with a white head. Shows a lot of similarities with this brewers regular lagerbier, citrus crisp etc. Altough this one is a lot heavier. Lots of honey! Its also quite alcoholic (too alcoholic if you ask me...).

Bottle 500ml.

Clear medium orange yellow colour with a large, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white to white head. Aroma is moderate malty, toasted, malty, sugar, light hay. Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet and light moderate bitter with a average to long duration, malty, bock alike. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20110819]
