3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
In short: A very toasted, rather dry and moderately hoppy cooper beer of some kind. Enjoyable.
How: Tap at brewpub.
The look: Clear copper body topped by a persistent small off-white head leaving lots of lacings on the glass.
In long: Nose is toasted, leafy hops, dry tree bark, burnt wood. In mouth, a medium body with plenty of soft bubbles. Taste starts with highly toasted cereals, a bit of caramel, croutons, some ferrous/rust notes (biting of a penny), a dry woodsy sensation. In the finish the toasty dryness dominates the leafy hops bitterness. I still fail to understand this style from a flavors standpoint, I know so little about what a California Common really is that technically speaking I could be one.

3.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
8 ounce sample on tap at the brewpub. The aroma is extremely faint. Lightly sweet nose with a mildly floral hop character. Lightly metallic, too. Transparent copper-amber body with a fizzy off-white head and good lacing present. Starts a little chalky and a bit chewy. Some toasted malts and light roastiness is also present. Finishes fairly bitter and rather herbal. More of an altbier than a Cali Common, though.
