3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap at American Flatbread in Burlington, VT. Pours a black body with a finger-width, dense and very creamy, brown head that dissipates slowly and leaves a solid lacing throughout. Aroma is big and fresh grapefruit pines with a light roast behind the hops. A nice chocolate malt backing comes out more as this warms and the hops get juicier and more resiny with some florals and a light caramel sweetness as well. Flavor is similar. Piney hops with a nice roast up front before some florals, a nice chocolate, and a bit of a toasted caramel. Citruses grow towards the end and they get juicy and oily alongside a growing roastiness. Dry, resiny, and roasty in the finish with a moderate bitterness that leaves a lengthy aftertaste. Medium, smooth, and a slightly creamy body with a soft, moderate carbonation. Overall, a solid Black IPA. Lots of juicy, resiny, citrusy pines and roasts balanced well with a solid chocolate and touch of caramel malt backing. Very soft and smooth throughout before this dries nicely. Enjoyable beer.

Draft that the brewpub (Flatbread’s Burlington Hearth) - Poured a very dark black brown in color with a medium creamy light tan head that settled, but still produced some nice lacing on the glass. Aroma is pine hops, some citrus, plenty of malts with some chocolate. Flavor matches... medium bitterness and not overpowering at all. Roasted malts and pine hop bitterness at the end. Really good... love it!
