Tap at the brewpub. Pale amber beer. The nose is a little bit sweet and malty. Softly sweet with a bit of soft sweet caramelly maltiness. Sort of a like a UK barleywine. There is a little bit of berryish character along with some lighter apricot notes. It’s kind of sweet with a light lingering fruitiness. There is a touch of leathery character on the back.

On tap in Feb 2008: Transparent dark copper pour has deep ruby hues and a fully-lacing froth of off-white head. Aroma of toasty nutty sweet caramel malt and some earthy hops. Body starts full and dark malty sweet with a lot of earthy bittering hops before a drier, toasty bitter finish. A little too bitter for the style, but still pretty drinkable.

(Rating #446)

6 oz. pour @ the brew pub. Deep garnet brown in a snifter. Not much head or lace. Nose is lots of caramel and a light fruit note. Malts are the main player and done well. The English malty taste is done correctly. In the finish it’s sweet with a light lingering fruitiness. The fruitiness is a product of a hop perhaps. I don’t know much about brewing English style ale. Not yet anyhow. None of the 6.8 ABV this batch was said to be. This brew was rather drinkable and enjoyable.

Clear caramel coloured. Rapidly diminishing head. Despite being rather sweet, this is one ale that greets us with a fair amount a freshness. From the fresh grains to the whisper of supporting floral hops, this is all cleanliness and good ingredient extraction. Pleasant candied aroma with strong pear, raisin, toffee and straight up cerealic maltiness. Trace alcohol. Sweet palate, though thin enough to avoid stickiness. Gentle, engaging carbonation. Hesitating a bit between being refreshing and being a sipper, but a pleasant drink nonetheless.
