A deep dark Czech style lager. Roasted and caramelised malts give chocolate and coffee flavours and a lasting cappuccino-style collar of foam.

Beese (1651) - Watford, Hertfordshire, ENGLAND - APR 15, 2014
Draught at the Reading Zerodegrees Brewpub on 22 March 2014. Poured a dark brown, with a halo of rocky, beige head. If I didn’t know better, I would have assumed that this was a pint of cola. Aroma of burnt sugar, toasted malt and rye bread. Dark malt flavours, with notes of brown sugar and chewy grain. Finish was bread, liquorice and grassy hop. Definitely the best of their beers that I tried.

Dark with a beige head that lasts nicely. Rich roasted malt, brown sugar, caramel, some dry hop to balance - really nice beer, easily the best of the three I tried.

Keg at Zero Degrees, Bristol. Very good, smooth coffee flavour. Quite nice. Easy to swig. A pleasant surprise. One of the better Schwarzbiers I’ve tried.

UPDATED: DEC 4, 2012 (On tap at Zerodegrees, Blackheath, London) which is one of my local drinking dens and this Black Larger is my autumn/winter session brew of choice. Have been drinking this for years and never tasted anything else quite like it. The trick is to cradle it first to warm, as I always find its served to cold for my liking straight from tap, but give it some time and then it comes around its very drinkable indeed. It pours dark brown with a tan head, nice aroma and complex taste combination of smoky, nutty, malt/caramel, and coffee chocolate. A firm session favourite of mine at the local.

Brewpub Cardiff. The head is stable, the body black. It smells a bit flat chocolate. The taste is a bit malty, darkmalty, roasty, a bit flat. It was served to cold and with to much CO². 11/10/9/9/-/9

berkshirejohn (4454) - Bracknell, Berkshire, ENGLAND - AUG 31, 2012
On tap at Zero Degrees, Reading, stated ABV 4.6%. Pitch black with a ring of beige head, and high carbonation; aroma of dull chocolate malts; dry and spritzy in the mouth with a good chocolate malt flavour; soft and sweet to finish with an underlying bitterness. Rather light and inconsequential overall.

Complex and very interesting. Take time to enjoy the mix of high and low notes. Kind of chocolatey and rice krispies. Very delicious but perhaps not on such a hot day as today.
