330ml bottle. Reflective ruby with a high beige collar going nowhere. Juicy spiced aroma with root beer, dandelion and burdock, juniper, plum and cinder toffee notes. Juniper spice and berries carry over into the flavour with oak and mellow chocolate and a splash of rum-like heat to finish. Plume of distant cigar. Too much booze. Winner.

Draft at Monks. Pours a cloudy amber with thin off-white head and soapy lace. Nose of roasted malt, caramel, dark fruits. Medium body. Somewhat sweet with a very dry finish, moderate bitterness. Similar to a typical Belgian Christmas beer until the finish.

Pours deep ruby-tinged mahogany into a snifter. Dark caramel and pit fruit aromas. Medium bodied with sweet dark pit fruit, fruitcake and caramel front to back. Lasting mildly bitter earth and distant banana finish.

X-Mas Zinnebir has a medium, fizzy, cream-colored head, and a cloudy, brown appearance, with lots of bubbles, tan chunks, and lacing left behind. The aroma is of subdued spice, with a preponderance of brown bread and stereotypical strong ale smell. Taste is the same, with overriding brown bread and a strong bitterness, which grows across the sip. Mouthfeel is pretty heavy, and X-Mas Zinnebir finishes semi-dry, rich, hearty, and good. Overall, I liked its focus on beer flavor, instead of spices. I recommend it. RJT

Pours a deep copper color with two fingers of tight tiny bubbled eggshell foam. Nose is full of fruity yeast, moist earth, cedar, cinnamon, raisin, leather. Palate follows... complex, touch of boozy warmth, nice balance between yeasty esters, earthy mystery and spicy booze. Touch of bitterness and spice lingers. Good carb ! Proper.
