COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Zipline Brewing Co.’s Oatmeal Porter is a winter seasonal brew which casts an unusual spell over its followers—a desire for winter to never end. Incorporating the smooth creaminess of organic rolled oats, our Oatmeal Porter ditches the stout’s roasted bitterness in favor of a porter’s mysterious dark chocolate and coffee undertones. A little creative hopping leaves a balanced beer that’s not your traditional porter.

bottle @ John’s Grocery / Iowa City IA --- Opaque black color, head that quickly drops to the rim, light stringers of lace. Taste is clean bitter malt that moves without change through a short finish. Pretty unassuming, but the one taste it has is enjoyable.

Bottle. Pretty much black colored body with a tan head. Nose of rich milk chocolate. Sweet oatmeal is also present. Hints of caramel. The body is smooth and slick. This tastes like chocolate chip pancakes doused with caramel and coffee. A nice walnut character. Tasty.

Crushed while Jakebra was using the toilet!
Pours basically black with a small loose-ish tan head.

The aroma is rich and roasty, it’s got a lot of freshly roasted coffe character. It’s got some lighter hints of ashiness and chocolate... but it’s awfully coffe forward with some restrained sweetness.

The flavor hits some real high notes, it’s mildly sweet with a touch of bright fruity hops and a little bit of dark fruit too. It’s got a nice coffe character and a good dark chocolate thing going on. The bitterness is satisfying at one level but it’s got this lightly astringent ashiness lurking in the background that throws it off for me a touch. Otherwise it’s really very nice.

The mouthfeel is nicely full and the low carbonation works well on this one.
cool beer

Aroma is dark/roasted malts, earthy and chocolate. The flavor is roasted malts, fruit, citrus and an acidic/lightly tart finish.

UPDATED: AUG 28, 2014 Oatmeal Porter really does have some nice things going for it. I like that the roasted malt aroma had a hint of cocoa. The coffee flavor is also quite nice. I did, however, want more of the chocolate tones to come through. Additionally, I hoped that the incorporation of oatmeal would give this beer a silky smooth body. Instead, I found the oatmeal to be largely unnoticeable. This is a good beer but I wanted more from it.

Black light head some froth. Malt in aroma chocolate, ash, roast, mineral, metallic. Same in taste with more coffee/ashyness. Fairly smooth drinking from the oats,, bitter and astringent finish. Not a great finish or aftertaste. Ashy astringent finish. Zipline-meh, so far.

12 oz. bottle. Weak, all around. Weak aroma, little roasted barley apparent. Weak, watery flavor. Not bad or off flavors, just very weak with only a hint of roastiness. Palate is the only good aspect, with a very nice level of carbonation (i.e. very little). Will not buy again.
