TURDFERGUSON (1594), Carrboro, North Carolina, USA May 30, 2008 Bottle. Pours a deep reddish amber with a nice white head and good lace. Nose is earth, cherry, barnyard, a bit of oak. Flavor is heavy with cherries, some funk and malt. Easy drinking for 7%. Pretty tasty sour ale. DMRz (218), Durham, North Carolina, USA May 26, 2008 Dark dirty brown color with persistent tan head. Aromas of red cherry, sweet malt, and brett. Rather sweet malt flavor balanced by sour fruit. Finish is sour and refreshing. Excellent. RCL (1444), Waltham, Massachusetts, USA May 26, 2008 Tons of red fruits in the aroma. Very lightly tart for a sour ale, but that makes it quite drinkable. Nice lightly acidic counterpoints to the rich caramel flavors. Stine (1380), St. Paul, Minnesota, USA May 19, 2008 Thick rust orange pour; healthy thickness of white foam and a muddy body. Salty gym sock funk and sun rotted pineapple, tomato and cherry aroma; very juicy, overripe and steeped in acetic acids and white oak tannic bitterness. Hints of orange peel and dusty cinnamon indicate the robust flemish red malts that linger warmly under this soft funk and restrained tartness. Flavor of prickly pear, maraschino cherry, golden kiwi fruitiness consistently treated with the darting dryness of minerals and wood. Plenty of unripe citrus quality as well; the flavor of the last bite of fruit on a mango, dipping into the rind a little. Raspberry lemonade. Not as dry as a typical flemish red and pleasantly absent of that plain, wicking sugary acid; rather, a restrained show of acidity and only a soft degree of tartness lending sharpness to this surprising depth of malt. Pleasant and relaxed. Gingerbread and baked apple mid palate, coolly spiced and refreshing. Mouthfeel is medium to full with a yeasty doughiness that softens every corner of the mouth. Finish is a searing zing of mango and a calming blackberry tart. A warm, expressive example that demonstrates balance in a really loveable way. Thanks Andre! kmweaver (2396), Sebastopol, California, USA May 19, 2008 750mL bottle. Pours a hazy, bright orange-amber color; light tan / taupe head with fine-bubbled lacing and a thin layer of retention. Tons of juicy pineapple in the aroma: bright citrus, overripe cherries and funk; good levels of tartness and a mild acidity. Fluffy carbonation; creamy, medium-to-full mouthfeel: following the nose, lots of pineapple present upfront, followed by tart cherries, citrus, and a pleasant red-fruit maltiness; well-developed tartness, acidity and reasonably dry overall. Well-done sour ale. Medium finish: bread, red fruits, and some dry, toasty malts. beachbum25 (778), Powellville, Maryland, USA May 16, 2008 750 ML Bottle-pours a murky brown color w/a moderate tan head & good lacing w/lasted thru the brew. Sweet, funky, fruity, aroma. Crisp, tart, sour, funky, earthy flavor. Sweet like a classic Belgian w/a fruity edge to it, flavors of dark friut, cherries, & blackberries. Very acadic, this is a slow sipper, not one you can knock back in a hurry. Long, tart finish. Snojerk321 (1918), San Diego, California, USA May 16, 2008 750ml bottle from BevMo. Pours a darker shade of amber with a white head. Pleasant citric, bretty aroma. Flavor has notes of brett/horseyness, citric acidity, lemon, wood and blackberries. Dry finish. Medium to light body with moderate carbonation. Admittedly, I am far from an expert on this style but I found it enjoyable.
DocLock (4648), Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA May 12, 2008 Bottle from State Line. Pours hazy magenta rubyish with dark brown edges and a sizable khaki head. Nose is tart fruit, including cherry, berry, spicy yeast, some sour mashy notes, and some peaty earthy notes. Tastes crisp, tart, with cherry, red grape, and berry predominating, plus some earthy notes. Remains smooth, with the tartness not being overpowering. This one was stellar from beginning to end.
