Ale_Drinker (1072), Sunnyvale, California, USA Jul 2, 2008 Pours brown/red with a slight haze. Big lasting head. A very clean barnyard aroma (is that an oxymoron?). Leathery is a very good adjective here. Not as sour as I was expecting, but a whole lot more aroma/flavor. Pretty light in body. Refreshing. A very nice change of pace.
Taverner (442), San Ramon, California, USA Sep 3, 2008 Pop this open and you can smell the farmhouse funk! But the aroma dissipates quickly and you get that golden Belgian aroma with light barnyard. Pours chocolate brown with white head - flavor is a tempered sour against a tempered sweet - excellent balance of the two! thornecb (1073), Marblehead, Massachusetts, USA Aug 31, 2008 Pours reddish brown into a snifter. Ecru micro head with good retention leaves sheet lacing as it slowly recedes to skim surface. Sour cherry aromas. Creamy and tart with upfront cherries and a lasting, dry bitter pit finish. cbkschubert (1573), Skyline, Arizona, USA Aug 31, 2008 On tap @ 1702 - Pours a hazy amber color with a medium size off white head which took its sweet time to fade. Nice lacing. The carbonation was light, but long lasting. Aroma is tart esters (apple). The flavor was a sweet/tart ester combo. Light to medium body. One of the better Sour ales I’ve tried. Kinz (1902), Glen Allen, Virginia, USA Aug 24, 2008 Medium amber, decent head fades fairly quickly to just a faint trace. Aroma is surprisingly strong of horseblanket and wild critters, with a touch of vinegar and very sour cherry. Flavor is more in line with what you would expect in a Flemish Red - sweet and sour cherry, a bit of vinegar, finishing tart and rather dry. Not bad, but not my favorite version of the style. nearbeer (1237), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Aug 22, 2008 750 ml. Ruby-tinted dark copper with a robust one-finger head. Thick frosty icing on the glass. Tart berry-cherry aroma with a touch of honey. Initial flavor is a sweeter-tasting tart berry, but quickly turns to the more sour one of the aroma. Some hints of vinegar, but seems to have a little creamy flavor and body that blunts the acidity a bit, which is nice IMO. An earthy aftertaste develops some brown sugar, apple, medium rare steak, and horse blanket among other tastes. Medium body is smooth and softly carbonated, but tingly with an acidic dryness. Not a huge fan of the style, but this one is pretty nice.
