| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Feb 8, 2008 oh lovely. what a nice beer. i can’t remember when i enjoyed a beer this much. (of course it’s also true that at this stage of my geriatric decrepitude i can’t remember where my parents live).
this is a big-bodied fruit punch, with an aroma of good cigars that have steeped themselves unto pulp in a brine of sea salt and sponge cake. just lovely. it’s the color of mature rust just before it crumbles into dust, and trends to far more clarity than what we expect from the promises of politicians. good head and carbonation all around, the lace clings to the glass like toilet paper on a teepeed tree after a good rain.
there is a gusting 20 knott aroma that streams around my nose like standing oceanside before a storm: smelling like a cherry packed band-aid box. it’s an earthy kind-of aroma, like a dank plywood compost bin on a warm fall day-- full of earth and apples; this is a gritty beer that tastes like it wasn’t brewed, but grown in peat and pig manure, in moldy darkness alongside mushrooms and bone-white salamanders.
the flavors have the kind of bulk sought after in NFL linebackers; this is a true sipping beer: creamy, metallic and sweet, part sweet marsala wine, part unfiltered cider and part primordial zulu compress of bugs and baobab roots prescribed for compound fractures. zoetzuur has notes of cocoa, tin, and tea (one is reminded of the export commodities of ceylon).
indeed a lovely beer: swirl, sniff, sip. repeat. swirl, sniff, sip, repeat.......

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Dec 8, 2009 750, corked and baled. Pours a crystal clear dark brown with ruddied overtones, plenty of sudsy, creamy tan head knocking around. Nice sheets of lace coming down the sides of the glass. Big tart nose of lemons, balsamic, and plenty of wood. Creamy medium body, understated carb. Lemons, balsamic, and wood again--the barrel notes give this beer an almost tannic bite, almost acidic. Mild but prolonged tart finish. This isn’t a beer with amazing complexity, exactly, but what’s here is beautiful and drinkable and delicious. boFNjackson (1329), Portland, Oregon, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Nov 27, 2009 Bottle... Poured a deep, dark amber with a thin, greyish, khaki head. Tart, Belgian-like yeast and light fruit aroma. Mildly carbonated and a lot of spices in this beer. Not as dry and tart as I would hope though. Still solid with a lot yeast complexity and sugary malts. Woody and oak like in there a little bit as a nice complement to all the sweet funkiness. obguthr (1083), Poquoson, Virginia, USA
| 4.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 10/10 | 4/5 | 20/20 | Nov 26, 2009 Tart aroma of green apples, cherries, and a barnyard, a little vinegary. Clear ochre, thin head, good lacing. Tart dusty, funky, sour apple flavor teased with cherry and currant. It finishes with malt and apple core. The perfect amount of sourness with an equally perfect amount of farmhouse funk. It is cutting through the fat of the veal I am eating like a Ginsu.Top knotch, and quite possibly Belgium’s best sour ale, IMHO. DuffManSW (297), Riverside, California, USA

Pours a hazy chestnut brown with a off white head and lots of carbonation bubbles...Aroma is sweet with some brett and maybe some tart cherries.. Flavor is raisins, slightly tart with kind of woody finish...Lots of carbonation. ElGaucho56 (393), USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Nov 21, 2009 750ml bottle, Chimay glass. Pours a ruddy brown with minimal head but luscious lacing, nose is quite intense, balsamic vinegar, tart cherries, mustiness, beef jerky. Quite rich and full on the palate, not too tart, dominant currant malts with a slight peppery hop finish, meat and tobacco, long finish leading to a butterscotch sweetness. Quite a nice example of the style, nicely balanced. hisskirt (5), California, USA does not count | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Nov 8, 2009 This beer pairs really well with air-dried sausage, a nice addition to a plate of salumi. Red-gold in color, pleasant dove-white head. In a tulip glass the aromas are green apple, guava, yeast and caramel. Just as its name says, it’s sweet-sour at the same time. Toffee aftertaste. Lively carbonation. travita (1970), Frisco, Texas, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Oct 21, 2009 Reddish color with a nice foamy white head. The smell is fruits, tart, funk, wood, and some sweetness. The taste is funk, wood, sweet, tart, and fruits. Some toffee. I was impressed by this beer. SpringsLicker (2043), Tennessee, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Sep 21, 2009 Thin off-white head forms over a murky brown brew that looks much like an apple cider that is beginning to ferment.
Tart apple aroma, some barnyard.
Extreme vinegar notes that fade a bit as the tongue becomes accustomed.
A bit sharp at first.
