2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
Dark golden appearance, soapy white head; good lacing. Faint, fresh lake water aroma, not unpleasant. Crisp, clean flavor with a brief bit of spearmint and honey sweetness. Clean, crisp mouthfeel, not at all metallic as some of this ilk seem to be. Pleasantly surprised.

1.7 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 6/20
Head is initially small, frothy, white, mostly diminishing. Body is clear
medium yellow. Aroma is lightly malty (grain), lightly hoppy
(herbs), with notes of solvent and gasoline. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, moderately bitter, husky. Medium body, watery texture, fizzy carbonation, lightly alcoholic. Industrial, grainy, fizzy, fusel alcohol, typical Russian swill.

2.7 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Bottled. My first impression of Russian lagers was that they were too sweet, but maybe that was just the Baltika. This is suitably dry, the color is a nice golden hue with a thin head. Maltiness plays well with a little bitter. A nice standard beer.

2.6 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Large offwhite/grey head, mostly lasting with splotchy lacing.. Good looking clear amber lager. Somewhat soapy, malty nose. Medium body. Malty, corny flavors with a hint of wet cardbord, yum. Astringent, dry finish.

It seems to be Zolotaya Bochka Klassicheskoye. This brewery also brews a malt liquor (the worst of all) and a light beer ("Probably the best beer in Kaluga" :) The less alcohol the better beer. This "Classic" is very middle-of-the-road.

1.6 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 5/20
This is brewed by Kaluga Brewery Company not far from Moscow. The Kaluga brewery is part of the SAB giant, and also brews Miller Beer under a 5 year licence agreement which runs out in 2005. The recipe is supposed to date from 1875, although the brewery only began making it in May 1999. This is quite popular in Russia and could be compared to Bud in terms of quality and market appeal. The English translation is Golden Barrel - Classic. Best avoided.

2.5 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
Smells bad. A smidge better than the Botchkarev, perhaps. Thin and watery. Undistinguished from an american standard.
