Bottled in Vienna. Old ratings. Extremely sweet caramel and sugary flavors, with no subtlety, no redeeming characteristics, just way too sweet.

This is a beer I encountered while in Vienna, and found that - sadly - it was not being exported to the United States. It is sweet, the bouquet is transporting, and it is quite rewarding in its genial drinkability. I do not miss the hoppyness and bitterness of most brews, and I find it delightfully different.

On tap. It pours a deep reddish brown with an enormous beige head. The aroma is malts and molasses, very much like a malta, but it isn’t particularly powerful. The taste is particularly sweet and sugary, with only some slight, earthy bitterness to it from the hops. The mouthfeel is easy, thin and watery with very gentle carbonation. A very easy-to-drink beer.

Bottle on a hotel balcony in Vienna. Clear orange-red coloured with a medium sized off-white head. Sweet and malty aroma of caramel and dried fruits with notes of cane sugar. Sweet flavour of caramel and cane sugar with notes of hops. Hoppy finish. Too sweet.

Deep brown colour with a tan head. A very sweet nose with some roasted notes. Medium body, a bit sweet and light biter. Sweet! caramel malty and light roasted malt flavour.
[Bottle from local grocery store in Vienna]

Bottle from Spar in Hainburg. Brown color with medium off white head. Roasted malt, caramel, earthy notes in aroma. Extremely sweet taste, with caramel, roasted malt. Bad.

500ml bottle. Pours a small long lasting white head. Colour is cola brown/black. Nutty aroma. Taste is thin and oily. Very strong carbonation. Very sweet, with a strong hint of maltloaf. Finish is short. An unusual beer. Wouldn't call this a dunkel really. The sweetness is too overpowering to make it enjoyable and I struggled to finish the beer to be honest. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

500ml bottle, outdoor at a café called Rad’l Treff in Dürnstein. Dense, off-white head leaving spotty lacing behind. Deep, dark brown body. Aroma of sweet dark malts. Dark, bread-like malts in flavour, very sweet. Dry and sweet ending. Way too sweet, 29.07.2012.

Bottled. The aroma is sweetish and has caramelic sugar mainly. Clear, dark brown coloured beer with an off-white head. The taste is awfully sweet and has caramel, sugar. Quite sirupy malt juice. Just as a note, not specially to only this Austrian brewery; I really wonder why they proudly present the date of birth of the brewery on their labels. After all these hundreds of years, still very average beer.
