3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 dykhuis7 (22) - New York, USA - OCT 23, 2009
Beautiful dark pour, nice creamy two finger head. Chocolate and coffee dominate the nose, with hints of raisins. Flavor is much the same, although I didn’t pick up the raisins in the flavor as much as I thought I would. Regardless, the balance of chocolate and coffee was right on. Nice complex palate makes for a great beer. And at $1.50 USD locally, probably one I will enjoy rather often.

500 ml. Initial sniff is of a doppelbock-ish Baltic Porter, but the taste reveals a strong roastiness. So its, raisins, licorice and coffee grounds, maybe. This is also a good looker, black with a big beige head. Fairly rich on the tongue with light carbonation. What Central Europeans do best.

500 ml bottle poured a clear dark brown with a lasting tan head. Aeomas of plum, raisin, dark chocolate, licorice and a hint of vanilla. Palate was light to medium bodied and crisp with a smooth dry finish. Flavors of dark fruit, dark chocolate, roasted malt, licorice and light vanilla with a smooth lingering roasty finish.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 Avengedpoet (326) - Mesa, Arizona, USA - AUG 24, 2009
Pours an extremely dark brown/black with frothy coffee cream colored head. Aroma notes are roasted malts, alcohol, and some higher-temp fermentation phenols. Taste is better, with lots of roast and alcohol intermingling with yeast fruitiness. Some ash, chocolate, and coffee notes are present as well. A good bargain at $2.49 a bottle.
