UPDATED: NOV 1, 2011 $2 bottle, from the corner deli. Very dark brown, almost black, with a huge fluffy light brown head. The aroma is chocolatey, milky coffee, earthy, caramel, root beer, vanilla. Medium to full bodied, it is sweet and malty throughout. Intense porter flavors of roasted malt, toast, bitter chocolate, coffee, woody, slight alcohol. The finish has just enough hoppiness to keep it in balance, and just a trace of it’s 9.5% ABV. Very flavorful, a nice surprise for $2.

This one’s a really pleasant surprise. I had tried a lager from the same brewer and it was really ordinary. Not so here. Nice malty aroma with a little smoke. Caramel, chocolate, bread, brown sugar, and a little smoke in the flavor, with a dry finish. No hint of the alcohol--I’m shocked it’s 9%. Fantastic.
