sensory first impression: Heavy alcoholic scent. Sherwood chills everything, which I’m not crazy about. Beautiful tan head with racing bubble effect. Nutty chocolaty scent rises up. 98% opaque - faintest red brown makes it through. head is foamy and luscious. Flavor is surprising, a bit metallic, very roasted, chocolate, and papery. Floral in second scent. Head hangs on. Nice bitter, long finish. This is a great stout. Filmy cloy is nice.
Aroma/Olfactory:
Malt flavor is: caramel, chocolate, coffee, nuts, and roasted.
Hop flavor is: resinous, floral, and bitter.
Yeast flavor is: sweet, earthy, dry and papery.
Other flavors include: alcohol, medicine, soy sauce, smoke, oak.
Visuals/Appearance:
Color is: brownish red, almost entirely black
Liquid is: thick and dark - almost no light comes through.
Head and lace are: bumpy, tan, and long lasting. Lace hangs on.
Taste/Flavor:
Maltiness or Sweetness level is: medium to heavy
Hoppiness or Bitterness level is: medium
Sour level is: light
Palate/Tactile:
Body or Mouthfeel is: full
Texture is: creamy, sticky, paper napkin, cotton
Carbonation is: soft to flat
Finish is: long and delicious
Overall experience: This is wonderful, and reminds me of both Brooklyn and Rogue in the quality of stout. It is definitely not Guinness, which to me is a great thing. It’s not completely smooth, and not all about the visuals (though both drinkable and beautiful), but is hoppy, surprising, and has great subtlety and balance. Amongst my highest rated of the style. I did a tour of Poland at Sherwood Liquors, and came out with one winner -- this was it.
drpimento (499), La Crosse, Wisconsin, USA Sep 3, 2008 Now here we have a remarkable beer. Abundance of character. all of the clasic baltic porter hallmarks coupled with individualistics such as roastiness, darker grains and perhaps a special yeastoid. Poured with a tan head, lots of lace and pitch black color. Opaque. perfect balance between bitter and sweet, with enough body to compliment the works. Bravo. almost robust enough to be too much of a beer for the session lablel. tough it out bro. AMN (98), Dublin, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 1, 2008 Thin brown head with a deep black body. Lots of chocolate/caramel malts in here. My only complaint is the heavy aroma of alcohol that overpowers some of the malt flavors. matt7215 (562), Cambridge, Ontario, Canada Aug 28, 2008 500ml bottle from premier gourmet. pours black with a lovely tan head. i couldnt ask for a better looking porter. aromas are thin. dark fruit and some coffee. flavours are similar with a bitter/tart/tin finish. not very enjoyable but not quite a drain pour. ill try again if it becomes availible locally other then that no way! fidel (140), Livermore, California, USA Aug 24, 2008 Dark brown, chocolate, caramel, roasted malts, molasses, little coffee, slight dark fruits, sweet, creamy, slight tart finish. $1.99 fata2683 (86), APO, New York, USA Aug 24, 2008 What a pleasant suprise. I went into a small store in Krakow to but all of the different brands of Polish beer I could find to rate. This was the standout although I fell in love with most of the Polish brands. This is just so roasty and rich. One of the best Porters I have ever had.
