In 1875 Charles Wells bought the Horne Street Brewery and pub estate in Bedford, which had been in existence since 1818. The company moved to the Eagle Brewery, Havelock Street, Bedford in 1976, merging with Young’s in 2006 to form Wells & Youngs, both splitting off their pub operations which continued separately. Wells bought out Youngs brewing share in 2011, and bought established brands such as Courage and McEwans, and contract brewed Kirin Ichiban and Estrella Damn. In 2018 Wells was sold to Marstons (Carlsberg Marston's Brewing Company); beers now being branded as Eagle. In 2022 Grupo Damm bought the brewery, though Eagle brands remain with Marstons.
