Mikkeller Single Hop Exhibition

Details

Mikkeller, the man who invented the Single Hop Series, has done it again. Last fall, the Mad Dane brewed 10 versions of the same base IPA, highlighting a different hop in each batch, using some of our favorite varieties including Amarillo, Cascade, Centennial, East Kent Goldings, Nelson Sauvin, Nugget, Simcoe, Tomahawk, and Warrior. For this event he added 13 new varieties while repeating six from the first round.

All 19 beers were brewed during the same week at de Proef in Belgium, from the same batches of malt, using the same yeast and fermentation temperatures, to better compare the unique characteristics of the different hop varieties. For each version, he used the same amount of hops for bittering, aroma, flavor, and dry hopping. The theoretical IBU’s range from 38 to 114. The single hop series will also be part scientific project, studying how hops evolve over time, how the choice of container affects the taste, as well as other parameters. The results will be evaluated by a team of professional tasters over the next few years.
