s most of you know I usually do not post on Rate Beer (or Beer Advocate), I consider these web sites for consumers and not brewery owner wanting to pimp an agenda. In this case I thought it was a good way to get more feedback from consumer’s who might be able to help us make next year better.
I want to thank everyone for their feedback; Natalie and I are extremely appreciative of all of our customers and the last thing we want are un-happy patrons. We take the criticism very personal! I want to sincerely and personally apologize to those that are un-happy with us for running out of beer and for the long line. We also want to thank again all those that came out in masses for Pliny the Younger!
We had no idea that 10 times more people would show up to the pub this year as compared to last. We sent out the same 2 emails as we did the previous 4 years, one after we brewed the Younger and another just before the release. Since we started making Pliny the Younger 6 years ago, social media as changed our world drastically and it is much easier for one person to tell another person about a beer or an event. It is probably a good thing that we don’t twitter, my space, face book, etc… or it could have been even busier when we opened the doors at 11am.
In hindsight, we should have made it a 2 growler minimum instead of a 4 growler minimum. We had the same limit last year and we still had growlers left after the first day, and last year we had less new growlers than we did this year. When we opened the doors and I saw that most people were ordering their maximum growler limit of 4, I immediately pulled the Dead Leaf Green off tap and made that a Pliny the Younger tap. We already had a double faucet of Younger running at the opposite side of the bar; this is where my amazing wife was the entire day, all the while on her bad knee that she has had 2 surgeries on over the last 6 months! Once I had three taps running at the bar, I set up a 4th tap back in the brewery for growler fills only. I want to take second to thank Brandon one of our delivery guys and his sister and brother in law who came back and helped build growlers for a good part of the day. I also want to thank Kyle and Eric from Kern River Brewing who helped me fill growlers in the brewery, also for a good part of the day. This is the true mark of the craft beer industry!
If you want to read more of my post feel free to go to our web site and read more as I do go in depth on the day.
Again, we appreciate everyone patience’s on Friday, we are sorry for the long lines, and we are sorry that we ran short on beer. We still welcome your feedback (info@rrbeer.com) and want to thank you for your time and your support. The info@rrbeer email address does go straight to my computer.
Finally, we will take what we have learned this year and use it to better next year’s release.
Thanks again,
Vinnie

I was one of the people waiting in line for close to three hours, but I have to say, the staff at RR could not have been more courteous. It was absolutely insane. If I was one of the bar staff or the dude outside letting people in, I probably would have let the stress get to me, but everyone there seemed to be keeping their heads and making it a really great day despite the challenges of dealing with a huge, beer crazed mob!
Thank you, Vinny, for the great beer that you create, and for being someone who actually cares about the customer. (see another recent thread!)
As for suggestions, selfishly, I would love to see this beer brewed more than once a year! I don’t care if it’s bottled or not. But with all the publicity there’s no way this will ever last more than a day ever again. So why not release it more often. That’s just wishful thinking on my part.
Thanks again to Vinny, Natalie, and everyone at Russian River, and I can’t wait to visit again on a non-younger day!

Wow, exactly what I think everyone wanted to hear.
Not to disrespect those that missed it but I must mention that the beer this year was also PHENOMENAL. Dry with so much aroma and volatilized hop character. Obviously some critics of the relative sweetness last year were heard.
Way to grow together and keep this all positive.

That thread is no longer there for some reason.
It sucks that some people missed out, but I don’t think there’s any way they could have predicted what happened. Kudos to them for making such great beer and being able to sell so much of it in a day. Keep up the great work!

The BA forum admins are pretty damn aggressive, apparently merging all PtY-related topics under this one heading. . .

Kind of a shame that you don’t at least give the brewer the privilege of his own thread to voice his thanks, praise, and apologia.
It’s kind of funny, however, to see that one guy RBassSFHOPit2ME post like 4 times (presumably in different threads) the EXACT SAME message about how great 21A Hop Crisis supposedly is.

I was so stoked to visit the brewery... made it there a week ago and was not disappointed. I didn’t get to meet Vinnie or Natalie, but damn, they run a great spot. Wish I’d gotten some of this year’s PtY, but I was well enough impressed by the beer I did get to try. I think RR is a must on any beer nerds itinerary.
