  ello to all,
I am new to rate beer and looking for some directions to some good beers. I am also new to the micro beer world. One of my friends is getting me into it so please help me out , I am a novice. My ques. is my friend and I are planning a trip in the summer of 2009 to Maine. We are looking for some of the best places for beer and food the area has to offer. So if anyone can help that would be great. We are thinking about going to Portland and bar harbor as two of our stops.
Thank you, Vaughn

Vaughn,
Get yourself to Belmont Party Supply in Dayton - you are probably only 25 minutes from there... http://www.ratebeer.com/Place/ohio/dayton/belmont-party-suppl

They will have more craft beers than anyone else around. Of course, Matt Ball has an excellent place too in River’s Bend, and you are probably about the same distance from him in Maineville... http://www.ratebeer.com/Place/ohio/maineville/river%E2%80%99s

Good luck - and feel free to drop me a question about the local scene. Try a bunch of stuff just to see if you’ll like it. When I was starting out it took a while to "get" hoppy beers. Use the style guides here on RateBeer to see what you can expect from different styles.
As far as a trip to the Northeast - I can’t help with Maine, but I can sure help with Western Massachusetts, which will be on your way. Again, drop me a line.
Lastly, check out the Cincinnati Local and the Columbus local to see what gatherings are going on - RB people are very cool with new people.
Best to you on this journey!
Michael

If you’re cutting through Massachusetts on 90, get off at the 90 & 495 intersection and head north on 495 to Rt 9. Take Rt 9 west to Julio’s . Well worth the trip.

Ebenezer’s is among the highest rated places in the world, although it isn’t incredibly close to Portland or Bar Harbor.
The Pannepot Cafe is supposed to be opening very soon, and that looks to be a killer bar for beer.
I’ve never been to Maine, but I’m planning on going through there for a couple of days in June, so I’ll let others that have been there recently chime in on what’s best.

In Portland ME the Great Lost Bear is a good way to sample a bunch of Maine brews, they do flights. Check the Allagash Website for tours. A little earlier in you trip if you coming up 95 out of Mass into NH you could stop in Portsmouth brewing or just to pick up some bottles in the gift shop.

2. Shipyard (good tour, tasting and gift shop)
3. Allagash (ok tour, good beer)
4. Gritty’s-best to worst(Auburn, Portland, Freeport)
5. Seadog Brewpub (Shipyard)
