My beer buddy (ChiGuy68) and I are traveling though Michigan next week starting this Saturday on a Beer Vacation! Please let us know if you have any suggestions for where we should go for beer in Michigan!!

We are coming from Chicago going to Grand Rapids, Detroit, Traverse City, and then back to Chicago via the shores of Lake Michigan. We plan on stopping at:
Livery – Benton Harbor
Hopcat – Grand Rapids
Bells - Kalamazoo
Kuhnhenn Warren
Dragonmead Warren
Shorts - Traverse City Area
Seven Monks - Traverse City Area
New Holland - Holland
Jamesport - Ludington

We will also be bringing some Chicago beers with us from Revolution, Pipework’s, and Half Acre Breweries for trade. We will be rating on RateBeer as we go along!!

Thanks,
Paul aka Pablo951

Sounds like a kick-ass, awesome time! Obviously, there’s so much to do throughout the state, narrowing it down would be difficult. I would consider adding Arcadia’s new location in Kalamazoo and the KZoo Beer Exchange if you have time, Dark Horse in Marshall, and how can you leave out Founders in Grand Rapids? Also, Traverse City has a lot of breweries really close together and Jolly Pumpkin has taprooms in Ann Arbor and just north of Traverse City on the peninsula that would definitely be worth considering.

If I were you guys, I would consider taking 94 to the Detroit area and hitting everything along the way, then 96 back through Lansing to check out the new HopCat there before hitting your Grand Rapids spots, then heading up to Traverse City and back down. Anyone from Flint/Saginaw/Bay City/Mt. Pleasant please feel free to chime in for cool stuff in those areas, but it seems like the Detroit area to Traverse City drive could be rather sparse if you head up 75 north.

Michigan is the best! Have a blast!

Great state for coastline and beers. Good names on west coast include:

Sawyer - Greenbush
Grand Haven - Odd Side
Ludington - The Mitten
Frankfort - Stormcloud
Traverse City - Terra Virma
Grand Rapids - Brewery Vivant

Don’t miss Founders for sure. And I agree with Mike on Griffin Claw, B. Nektar and Schramm’s. If you have time I would definitely add Right Brain, Dark Horse, Greenbush, and Odd Side to your original list.

Also, FYI, don’t take I-96 from Detroit to Lansing if that’s what you were planning. It’s closed for a good 10 mile stretch between Telegraph and I-275 I think.

All good suggestions. If you want to try a small brewer who is turning out tasty beer, try Bad Brewing Company in Mason, near Lansing about 10 miles off I-96.
