I’m really ok with wherever these end up. Sour ale makes the most sense to me of the existing categories... It’s a catch all after all. If a "new" style eventually is decided on, I’d vote for Berliner-Fruit. If you want to make up a new name it should come more organically than it has in this thread.

this is nothing new. probably half the ’fruit beers’ on this site are not prominently fruit, and ive had plenty of other styles that are super fruity and yet they are not a fruit beer, blabaer for instance, doesnt get much more prominent than that now does it?

also, for some reason a tiny amount of spice makes some beers spice beers, even though the pumpkin is more prominent; and the fact is pumpkin is a fruit, not a vegetable. other beers with tons of spice, like dark lord de muerte and hunahpu’s remain in the imperial stout category. yet not one pumpkin beer that i can find is listed in the fruit category. i suppose every single pumkin beer ever made has more spices than pumpkin right??? wrong, cause ive seen at least 3-4 beers where the brewer mentioned NOT using any spices, only pumpkin, yet in the spice category they remain.

next will be chocolate or coffee beer. some will still be left as imperial stouts, but others that might detract from those big boys will likely be filed away elsewhere so as not to cause turmoil in the ever important top 50 lists. its nice to say hey, this beer would be a mediocre sour, but as a fruit beer itll be a top 5, better trade value there too, and keeps people 1 tick ahead on those top 50’s.

just how it is, it works well enough. just drink what you like.

Actually, since the ratings on this site are theoretically hedonistic, the categorization of a beer should play no part in how highly one rates it. Therefore, the categorization of a beer should play no part in whether it’s a top fiddy or a top eight hundred fiddy... unless you’re referring to each premium member’s customized top fiddy. Know what I mean?

Damn, Baker. You’re so damn difficult and uptight all the time. Just chillllll. Sheeesh!

Serious question here: Let’s say Funky Buddha brews a fruity berlinerweisse (Floridawiesse) with magic fruit as the secondary or tertiary fruit. After the first couple sips, when the shit loses all perceived tartness and becomes almost sickeningly sweet and fruity, does it then become just a fruit beer?

I really hope some brewery does this. It would be so Willy Wonka.

If fruity berliners become known throughout the world as Floridaweisse, I take full credit since I created the name on the facebook page for Berliner Bash on the Bay. FACEBOOK, man. Important shit. Know that... and you’re welcome.

I just KNEW that if I stuck around ratebeer long enough and kept throwing shitty ideas out there, one day, some way, one would finally hit and stick... and then I would actually matter.

It’s more the desire to have our database as accurate as possible. I don’t think anyone is going to be upset if their opinion doesn’t "win"
This is where I fall; I just thought the discussion was worth having.
