Compost. Do not use chemical ferts. Hops like organic, slow feed, natural ferts. 5/2/2008 5:43:11 PM

I dont have compost and no compost pile....

2nd best options? What about "all natural fertilizers" or something like that?

Go to one of the big box stores & buy some compost in a bag.
Then, make friends with the local dairy farmer. Composted cow shit is one of the best ferts out there.

Bat shit will burn hop plants. Too much nitrogen in it. Next time, do a little research.

I’m starting three varieties this year, Cascade, Goldings, and Ultra. I used composted manure, peat, and soil mixed with fertilizer. I dug a spot for each rhizome, about 4 feet apart from each other, planted them about 4-6 inches deep, watering a little every day (not soaking too much) and all three have broken through the soil within the first 10 days. I guess they’ll be alright for this year. We’ll see how they survive the winter. Last time I tried this I ignored all the cultivation info. and stuck the rhizome in sandy soil, no fertilizer, watering whenever, and it produced cones the second year and died thereafter. I learned. 5/3/2008 7:15:24 AM

Make a compost tea of composted manure and add 1 12oz can of cheap beer to the mix at a ratio of 1 part compost to 4 parts water for 2 gallons. Then water in your fertilizer around the plant. You might also want to add some lime to the soil every few years depending on what your soil’s ph is.

Also try to remember that hops don’t like their feet wet. Use a drip hose when watering and only water in times when you go more than 3-4 days without rain.

I actually think that cobra is the one thats wrong.....unless vinnie cilurzo has no idea what he’s talking about, which i highly doubt.

my money’s on vinnie and the bat guano (i guess you just have to use it right).
