o tonight I was bottling my porter and I realized I didnt have enough bottles and I had about half a gallon left. I decided to put the rest in a growler and tape it up. Can the beer carbonate in a growler even if it taped or is it not a good enough seal, or even worse, can growlers withstand carbonating pressure or possibly explode? I’m sure I sound like an idiot here, but any help would be greatfully appreciated.

I am no expert HB’er but I have put a decent amount of homebrews in a growler with no problem to date... 11/3/2009 9:04:52 PM

I used to do this a long time ago when I didnt have enough bottles. Never had a problem. I just treated them as a regular bottle. They can hold the pressure for long enough to drink em (a few months), and they can withstand at least 3 volumes I would think? They are definitely good in a pinch. 11/3/2009 9:27:40 PM

It really depends on the cap. If you used a good cap (they tend not to hold pressure as well after being used a few times) you should be good for a short time. After your beer is carbonated it will slowly lose carbonation over time so I would drink it first. 11/5/2009 6:43:07 AM

Bigsilky 322:4 I think the OP wanted to know if the beer could re-ferment in a growler. I would say no. Not explosively, but I would certainly expect to find a mess and a leaky cap, especially if their was a little more sugar than needed in the beer. Just an opinion 11/5/2009 8:11:45 AM

bottling homebrew in growlers is totally fine. ive done it 20+ times and the worst thing that has happened was one time i got a gusher. plus more beer in growlers means less 12 oz bottles to clean, sanitize and fill thumbs up 11/5/2009 8:27:56 AM

Why would the pressure during bottle conditioning be greater than the pressure after the yeast have consumed all available sugars? 11/5/2009 9:38:49 AM

I have bottled in my Stone swing top growler many times and had no problems. But I’ve never used a screw-cap growler.

Does this work, oh Knights of Homebrewing?
