The upset seed difference certainly makes it more interesting and a lot harder to make picks because you’re picking teams that might only have a 1 in 4 or 1 in 5 chance of winning, but if they do, you might get 7 times the number of points. It’s much more of a statistical mathematical picking than it otherwise would be. That said, I know a lot of people complained about it last year and it seems the majority of people this year prefer the standard scoring system.

The issue was the disproportionate amounts of points for seed difference. Basically it made the default choice to pick all upsets for 7-10, 6-11, and 5-12 games. If the bonus points for picking upsets were based on trends from tournaments gone by (e.g. the 12 seed upsets the 5 seed 34% of the time since the field expanded to 64), then the bonus should be 3 points rather than 7. Also, I kind of like the idea of a multiplier in later rounds, which I don’t think we had last year. I think all of the upsets were really picked in the first round then it was down to business.

Whatever the decision is on scoring it needs to be made ASAP. I want to have the chance to change my picks accordingly.
