This is bad news and unfortunate. I went ahead and cancelled my membership as the quality of C&H is run of the mill beer you can easily trade for or buy locally for much less:

Dear xxxx,

Beverage Bistro is excited to announce that we have merged The Rare Beer Club with C&H Clubs of Southern California effective immediately. We think that this a perfect marriage and the primary beneficiary will be our club members. To begin with, there will be a price reduction for all members effective this month. Our three bottle members will save $.75 per shipment, our four bottle members will save $4.50 and our six bottle members will save a whopping $13.50 per shipment! Please be aware that, commencing with June charges, depending on which card we have on file for you, either “C&H Clubs” or “Monthlyclubs” will be the name that appears on your credit card statement.

Second, beginning with the August shipment, all members will receive two spectacular selections per month as opposed to the one that you receive right now. We are all beer lovers and I think you will agree that this will be one of the most exciting benefits of the merger.

We will be transitioning our Customer Service team to C&H. I have known these guys for years and they are as good as it gets in the business. We are working on the specifics of the transfer right now and I can assure you that we won’t lose a beat as it goes forward. The attention will be where it has always been: squarely to the interest of all of our members. In fact, feel free to call us at anytime you have any questions or concerns—our team at Beverage Bistro isn’t going anywhere and they will be happy to take care to coordinate and complete the process with you on a personal basis.

Some other things won’t change at all—like our name, monthly product emails, philosophy toward bringing you great beers, and amazing customer service. The bottom-line is that we think Michael Jackson would approve of the new arrangement and are confident you will be very happy with it as well.

In introducing Kris Calef, the founder of C&H, let me share a little something that speaks volumes. While we have been competitors for years, Kris has also secretly been a member of our Rare Beer Club almost since inception. Believe me when I say you have no better friend.

Cheers,

Robert Imeson
CEO Beverage Bistro

Hello Rare Beer Club Members!

I asked Lisa, Rob and the rest of the team to allow me a paragraph or two to introduce myself to you and to share with you what a great honor it is for me to be a part of what I consider to be the finest craft beer club available and one of Michael Jackson’s many notable contributions to the industry. And yes, it’s true, The Rare Beer Club is the only competitive club I felt worthy of joining myself over the years and I have paid Rob a small annual bribe until now to keep that information to himself.

I’m proud to share with you that in 1994 I founded wha

I’m proud to share with you that in 1994 I founded what is now the largest Beer of the Month Club in the country, offering four distinct membership formats. Since that time we’ve launched five other gourmet clubs, but rest assured, beer has been, and always will be my passion. With somewhat selfish motives, we recently launched a high-end beer club with the intent of competing directly with the Rare Beer Club. I wanted to offer a service whereby I wouldn’t be restricted by beer costs, one that would allow me to feature the best craft products the industry has to offer to a small group of consumers that are as passionate about the product as I am myself. With the merger with The Rare Beer Club, I’m confident that we’re accomplishing those goals and quite a few more.
You have my assurance that our focus will be on continuing to introduce you to limited-release, celebratory, artisanal beers. We’ll continue to work with craft brewers that you’ve come to love over the years such as Tomme Arthur and Manu de Landtsheer, offering selections that push the envelope of creativity, are not yet distributed in the US, and often brewed such that they can be cellared and aged.

I invite you to contact me to share with me your thoughts on how we can continue to improve this most prestigious club and assure you that one of the key contributing factors to our success has always been our willingness to listen and react to our customer’s feedback. I can be reached at 949-206-9107 ext 100 or kris@monthlyclubs.com and very much look forward to serving you…literally!

Cheers,

Kris Calef

From what I just saw on their website, "run of the mill" is being very generous. 6/8/2009 8:41:07 PM

Just got the notice of the first beer being offered since the switch. It is a barrel aged 9% red ale from Argentina. Should be interesting. I think it is only the second selection I’ve not skipped in the last year or so.

I see no reason to drop since you can skip any selections that you don’t want.

Yeah I looked around at the C & H "Collectors" selections for the past 8 months or so, and they don’t seem bad. Some Trois Mosquetaires, Mikkeller, a lot of things that are worthwhile to me. 6/9/2009 3:32:25 PM

The selection seems pretty good but on the pricey side for the membership. Those of you that are members do you feel like you get your money’s worth? 6/25/2009 4:18:58 PM
