Cleaning a Wort Chiller

’ve been pouring through message boards and websites trying to figure out what to do with my wort chiller. I’ve gathered the best way to clean the chiller initially is to boil it or at least soak it in a white vinegar/water mixture.

A lot of people suggested putting the clean wort chiller in the boil for the last 15 minutes. I know I’m coming off like a real idiot, but are we talking about the hour long wort boil? It just strikes me as odd that you would put a wort chiller into boiling water. Is it assumed that whatever bacteria you might introduce to the wort with the chiller will be boiled off in the 15 minutes? I’m just confused about using a chiller as I’ve never seen anyone use one and I’m getting lots of mixed opinions on some boards.

I assume you are talking about an immersion chiller. Yep, clean it off nicely, then to sanitize it just goes into the hop boil w/ 15 minutes left. Not with water running through it obviously. Then you are ready to go at KO. Anything should be killed in that amount of time. 11/6/2009 9:12:59 AM

remember to have a good destination set up for the water coming out of the immersion chiller. especially if you are brewing inside. I was doing it outside in Michigan and just poured all over the drive way, ended up with some nasty ice out there 11/6/2009 9:16:54 AM

Boards are very good if you want mixed opinions.

I cant remember which, but Jamil Z. And John Palmer talk about copper chillers and copper pots in one of these show. At the very least about 5 hours worth of good info.

I hit everything with PBW from time to time, including my immersion chiller. I hose it off thoroughly before I put it away, and again before it goes into the wort. I stick it in the wort a minute or two before the end of the boil. Never had a problem. 11/6/2009 10:54:15 PM
