Love this: In the past few months AB has treated me with consideration and seriousness, and they’ve presented me some pretty exciting future possibilities, should I be able to see my way clear to working for them. But I can’t. I am a craft brewer, past, present and future, no matter what I end up doing. |
Only a matter of time from a stellar brewer. Sorry, man @OldGrowth, I’m not surprised. God bless Dick Cantwell, happy retirement, man! |

Dang Texas experience... I read this as "Dick can’t well leave A/B" |

If Dick Cantwell, presumably with much to lose, can walk away from AB. I sure as hell can as well. |
Originally posted by Bulk_Carrier I should of done the , , to denote sarcasm, I wasn’t surprised either |

Bravo, sir! |
Originally posted by OldGrowth Yes, he was. This was a private vote between Dick and the other two founders. He’s publicly been candid about being the only one who voted not to sell. I don’t know the details, but I understand each founder stood to get several million (around 4 I think), provided they stayed with ABI for a year or two. If they leave, they can’t start a brewery for a year or two at least, and presumably don’t get any payout. I’m just guessing, but it’s hard to imagine such a contract being written any other way. He’s giving up a LOT to say he can’t be an ABI employee. He’s given up more cash than I’ll ever have at one time. Nobody has ever offered me millions of anything (other than chlamydia spores), but that has to be a gut-wrenching decision. He said "no" once, and when he lost that vote, he still got hit with a huge check. So he still said "no." Not once but twice. He’s always been a rad guy--solid brewer, fun way with adjunct beers, throws cool festivals, starts good places, does cool small-batch stuff, hires talented people. But now it’s hard for me to put into words how much respect I have for Dick Cantwell. He lives by his terms, and they’re the right ones. |
