Aging kills freshness. IPAs are best fresh. Over barreling to all hell kills the subtleness of good hops. A good discussion has ensued at a DC tasting today and it seems the consensus is its stupid.

Religions or BA IPA’s?

Brett IPA’s tend to be contradictious considering the two important ingredients, but most of the times, they turn out to be very tasty.
Yet a good Barrel Aged IPA is even more rare than Yellow Bus!

Of course the original IPAs were barrel aged, but for a modern brewery, unless you are going for something historic deliberately, I tend to agree that barrel aged IPA is a little silly.

But then again the same could be said for adding cara malt to IPA.

I have had a couple I’ve enjoyed. BA Black IPAs can also be good.

Depends on the beer. I’ve had some I thought were good though tasted more like a hoppy barleywine or American strong than an IPA. Overall, bad if you want a hoppy beer, but can be okay as something different if done well enough.

BA black IPA? Never seen one. What’s an example of a good one?
