Which reminds me...

I’ve been thinking about brewing a Malt Liquor, so how does this look:

Olde Fortan Malt Liquor
"Olde Fortan" is the malt liquor from Futurama.

I’m looking for some guidance because there doesn’t seem to be a lot of Malt Liquor recipes available. Probably because it’s not a BJCP-recognized style?

My plan for this brew is to make a sort of "Imperial American Lager." I decided to use 2-row rather than Pilsner malt, in keeping with the low-cost ingredients that probably go in commercial versions. Ironically, the adjuncts actually drive my price up. Hopefully, the addition of some six-row will add slightly more hull mass along with adding diastic power. I expect to do a fairly large cereal mash (about 20% of the total grist).

For bitterness, I’m shooting for IBU just above the bittering levels of a BJCP Premium American Lager, because I’m expecting higher sweetness from a higher FG here.

Batch size: 5.5 gallons

malt & fermentables
LB OZ Malt or Fermentable
10 0 American Two-row Pale
3 0 American Six-row Pale
1 8 Rice, White
1 8 Grits
16 0

hops
use time oz variety form aa
boil 60 mins 1.0 Northern Brewer pellet 8.3
boil 30 mins 0.75 Crystal pellet 4.0
Boil: 6.0 avg gallons for 60 minutes

Bitterness: 28.7 IBU / 9 HBU
BU:GU: 0.33

yeast
Saflager S-23 Dry Yeast

Strangely? Colt 45 comes in at #49 in the Ratebeer Top 50 Malt Liquor list. The top of the list looks like this:

1 Moonlight Toast (Slightly Burned) Malt Liqour
2 Dogfish Head Liquor de Malt
3 Bear Republic Triple J Malt Liquor
4 Silver City Deluxe Malt Liquor
5 Three Floyds Region Riot
6 Elysian PK-47 Pumpkin Malt Liquor
7 Three Floyds Dolemite Malt Liquor
8 Elysian AK-47
9 Ice Man
10 Walking Man Street Walker

If that’s your attitude, why brew any beer? Stores are stocked full of craft beer...
