ikes!

On Nov. 13, the FDA sent a letter to 30 [craft beer and other] manufacturers warning that "there are no food additive regulations that permit the addition of caffeine at any level in alcoholic beverages." The agency has given the companies a month to present scientific evidence that the combination of alcohol and caffeine is safe.

A few potentially affected beers:
Mikkeller Beer Geek Brunch
Founders Breakfast Stout
Alesmith Speedway Stout
Alta Gracia Coffee Porter
Capitol City Fuel
Ballast Point Victory at Sea Coffee Vanilla Imperial Porter
5 Seasons Imperial Coffee Oatmeal Stout

Wow. Chocolate contains caffeine, so I assume they will also pursue beers with that in it?

I just got a statement of process approval for a coffee added beer so apparently memos are not filtering down.

Yes coffee, chocolate, tea and guarana. There’s one SF brewer who does pretty much every methylated xanthine.

There are a number of spirits that contain coffee and chocolate extracts. I wonder if they got FDA letters too?

Ah, I see that they mention that in the article. If they really pursue this, it would decimate the ratebeer top 50. I’m guessing that it doesn’t come to that, but still a concern nonetheless.
