Originally posted by TheBookie I just came back from two weeks on Crete and in Athens where I followed the principle of drinking no beer but craft beer. I managed to drink beer every day despite staying in four different places during those two weeks. But I guess Crete and Athens are some of the only places in all of Greece (possibly together with places like Thessaloniki and Santorini) where this can be accomplished. By the way I bought a can of fresh Zorbas beer for the Copenhagen crew in a cornershop in Rethymno so I strongly doubt that they are retired despite the website’s claims to the contrary. Otherwise it would have had to be a relatively recent event as the beer had a BBD more than a year from now AFAIR. As Nightfall says a lot has happened to the Greek beer scene during the last 3 - 4 years. Some of the developments are covered in these articles, which I used for my own research before going: http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&langpair=elen&u=http://www.tanea.gr/ellada/article/%3Faid%3D4585038 http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&langpair=elen&u=http://www.clickatlife.gr/story/geusi/oi-kaluteres-ellinikes-mpires-mas-sustinontai%3Fid%3D2044629 |
Originally posted by TheBookie I corresponded with Majda from Santorini Brewing Company earlier in the summer. This is what she said about their founding date: "You wouldn’t have found us in 2010. We created the brewery in July 2011, so you didn’t miss our fresh beer the last time you were here..." |
I forgot to mention Corfu beers. They are brewed in Corfu, and you get them occasionally in Athens as well , if you find them give them a try. |
Check this out too. If you live in the UK. |
There is a new beer Bar as well that recently opened : http://www.facebook.com/V10.gr with a nice selection of Czech beers, they also have an organic vegeterian restaurant. |
I depart for Greece tomorrow, and finally remembered to check in on this thread. Thanks all, particularly Nightfall for the great recommendations. I will report back upon my return! |
What is the best way to get to The Local Pub in Chalandri from the city center? It doesn’t appear too close to any Metro stops. I’m not opposed to cabbing it, if that is the most timely option. |
Originally posted by kseecs16 1. A taxi from the center would cost about 10 euro and you will be there in 15-20 minutes 2. Metro blue line from Sintagma to Ag. Paraskeui station (9’) then you need to walk about 10-15 minutes. It is exactly 1km . |
Best beer I had in Greece was a bottle of Saison Dupont I lugged there in my backpack. Glad to hear there is a brewpub on Santorini now. That might be the most beautiful place on Earth. |
I’d worry about a lot more than just where to go to get good beer. |
