he beerprincess and I are going for "work" to tour wineries but will be drinking some brews as well. It has been 15 years since I have been there and really looking forward to going back! We wont have time to break away to hit any breweries but will be enjoying local pubs. I never remember seeing any beer stores. Any ideas on what I should pick up that is not seen over on this side of the pond?

Germany is large, so specifying cities or regions would probably be helpful.

We will mostly be on the West side. Flying into Frankfort and starting off in Wurttemberg, Mosel, Rheingau, Worms and Baden.

The Rothaus beers are fairly ubiquitous in the southwest and might be worth a try, I don’t think they’re exporting to the States. You might luck into some Alt or Kölsch the farther north you get, but probably only the bigger brands.
Be sure to check out the supermarkets, I had great luck with finding regional stuff and most allow you to pull singles.

Just keep your eyes open for Getränkemarkts - those are the best places to find beers. Two of the more wide spread ones are toom and Trink Gut but there are numerous others (even Real - basically German Walmart). Both toom and Trink Gut have websites. I know there is a toom store in Worms but it’s not really convenient. However, even most grocery stores will often have a decent beer selection. Worms also has a nice brewpub right on the Rhein.

At Frankfurt airport , there’s a market, with a few different beers, If I remember, licher,Neumarkter, binding, etc. its on the bottom level I believe. Many stores, even big ones,ie,Real, globus, edeka, carry whatever local brews there are! Have fun!

Do you have a car, or are you on a guided tour? As I live in Mainz, I know the Rheingau/Frankfurt/Worms-area very well & can recommend you some Getränkemärkte (bottle shops) in the region, if you tell me, where you plan to go or stay. You can also write me a message, if you like.

Yeah and the underground level of malls like KARSTADT have a big aisle of beer. Just wander in wherever it’s likely food is sold! Even big convenience marts have a few classic beers amindst the usual lagers.
Have fun over there.

Weisbaden is worth a stop on the way through Reisling country. There was a Konig Ludwig beer halll there if I remember correctly. But, that area in general from Frankfurt up along the Rhine is not stellar for brews. Gotta make your way up to Koln and Dusseldorf to do justice and still get some great wines along the Rhine.

Oh hell yes - Rielsling plus Bacchus, Silvaner and Kerner and a billion white wines like they taste nowhere else. Of course I’m thinking Franconia specifically.
The german Spätburgunder red is also steadily improving due to some warmer than historical growing seasons.
