I can’t solely rely on FedEx any longer, as their local station in Brockton, MA has screwed up two deliveries now.
DHL has delivered packages to the wrong address, despite large, clearly visible house numbers.
The UPS Store has treated me like an enemy of the state at times when I drop off a package.

In this case, I wouldn’t put theft out of consideration.
Who’s to say the local UPS station doesn’t also operate as a repair facility and had a case of brake fluid laying around? About the right size & weight for what an employee might have taken from you? One bottle conveniently opened and spilled?

My local FedEx Ground branch has 5 documented theft cases since last summer. One facility. 5 thefts in 7 months. Scumbags.

File a claim and demand the $$ you deserve.

I plan on filing a claim for sure. Doesn’t help Andy out with getting the retired Heavyweight and Stoudt’s stuff though unless they find it. At which point they will have to be alright with the whole fact that it was beer.

Still trying to figure out exactly what I’ll claim and how all that will play out.

Stick to your claim of "Specialty sauces". Changing your claim now would be suspicious. Don’t feel bad about lying. UPS agreed to deliver your package to the correct address in tact. They didn’t. The true contents, though against company policy, are still worth $$ and should be compensated for.

I would. I work for UPS Airlines and security into and out of our facility is so tough that I used to empty my pockets of everything but my wallet and the door key to my car. They nearly confiscated a bracelet that my wife made that I had taken in to show a co-worker. No way a Teamster is gonna walk out of there with any beer.

Check out this UPS horror story:

UPS and I have never been on the best of terms. When I pay for service, I expect service, and I just don’t feel I get it. Their workers are extremely well paid, and yet I’ve never come across a company who’s workers seemed to care less about the job they do. I don’t mean this as a blanket statement, only that it has been true in my experience. I’m not alone; the idea is so widespread that Jim Carrey did a hilarious bit on how UPS workers mistreat packages in one of his Ace Ventura films.

I have had more broken items delivered to me than you can imagine. Once, a box of glasses was delivered to me shattered and clinking in the box as the driver handed it to me. When I complained, he gave me an attitude and told me he could take it or leave it but had to be on his way. I explained that I was paying for a service (shipping) and had a right to expect that that service be properly executed.

Of course, I wasn’t surprised. A friend who worked at a jewelry shop had told me several times how when a truck came for a pickup the packages were literally tossed into the truck, and when he explained to the driver these were fragile items the driver laughed at him.

UPS is certainly not a consistent company. I have been known to ship beer from New England and Pennsylvania to friends in other parts of the country where said beers are not available. UPS would open the packages, call me up and tell me to come pickup the package. I arrived to do so. Upon arrival, the girl at the front desk explained thusly:

"We don’t deliver alcohol across state lines, so we can’t ship your package."

"Why not?" I asked.

"That is our policy, " she replied.

"OK, I’d like to see a manager then, " I said.

I am not an unreasonable person. If their policy is to not ship beer, I can respect that. But there was more to this, so I explained my displeasure to the Manager. He reiterated their policy.

"Please explain this to me then, " I demanded, "Why does your truck pull up to my house each month with a package of beer from my beer of the month club?"

I used one of their boxes to ship my beer since they were ideal to protect against breakage, and I suspect UPS opened it because they recognized the type of box.

"We do not ship alcohol," he replied, "They assure us there is no alcohol in those packages."

"You ship packages from a company called Beer Across America, and you believe there is no beer in them?" I asked incredulously.

"They assure us there is no alcohol in those packages."

Egad. When faced with such insanity, what can one do? Of course, i was shipping one package, Beer Across America ships 14,000 or so a month. That’s a big account to lose over something as simple as policy.

Whenever possible, I use the post office. They cost a little more, but I have found it’s worth it. I have yet to have a problem with a package delivered by them.

I figured I would post this out of frustration, to see if anyone else has similar stories and to hopefully help others avoid this potential situation. This post is long and as you read through it you may jump to conclusions before the end. But hang in there...the end sure isn’t what I was expecting!

So I set up a trade through Rate Beer with a fellow rater out in CA. A nicely packaged box of some retired Heavyweight and Stoudts beers as well as some other locals from Troegs, Weyerbacher and Dogfish Head. I wrapped each bottle individually with tons of bubble wrap and packaging tape. Also stuffed the box full with newspaper and made sure there was no bottle on bottle contact, everything was tight etc. I head over to my local UPS Store, fill out the paperwork and the package is on it’s way to CA.

So I’m watching the UPS tracking and everything is going fine. The package makes it to CA and it appears as though while the package is out for local delivery it gets damaged. I thought that was a little odd based on how I packaged it but knowing how some of the Heavyweight beers are with carbonation, etc. I was thinking well maybe one of them sprung a leak. I see online that UPS will be shipping the package back and I wait a week for it to arrive back at my local UPS Store.

I head over to the store and pick up the package, it had obviously been re-packaged and the label on the box has both my name and the name of the individual that was to receive the package. So I get it home, being to open it up, see another box inside the box UPS used to repackage that does not look like the box I sent out. But I figure that they must have repackaged the whole thing. As I’m pulling the inner box out I notice that the damage appears to be a dark fluid that has leaked out. Must have been the Weyerbacher Heresy. As I begin to open the inner box I start to notice that the items inside that box do not appear to be the beer bottles I had shipped out. Instead what I see inside is a case of Run-Rite DOT 4 Brake Fluid Super Heavy Duty Hi-Performance Brake Fluid. Of which one is upside down in the box, leaking out all over the place.

So...what happened to the box of beers I had shipped West? I called over to the UPS Store and of course the kids working there couldn’t help me out. The "manager" that handles claims is out until Monday and will call me when he returns. I really can’t figure out how this would have gotten mixed up. When I shipped out the package I saw the person working the UPS Store put the label on the box. So I’m not sure how they would have mixed up the package there.

I guess there is someone out there who was expecting a box of brake fluid and got a big box of great beer. I doubt the person who was shipping the oil is going to speak up since it is illegial to ship flammable liquids like that via UPS. The person who got the beer instead of the oild probably isn’t going to complain either. I can’t even really go into too many details with UPS as to what was in my boxes. I claimed it as "speciality sauces and marinades" valued at $100.

Andy we’ll work this out. I sent you a Beer Mail so just let me know how you want to handle.

Well time to get back to my 2005 Old Guardian..help me to forget about UPS for a little while.

Tom

I have never had a problem with UPS, but I don’t ship beer often, and don’t use them often. Believe it or not, Priority Mail from the Post Office is what I use most, and never had any issues or problems.

What about the couriers? They’re out doing their routes on their own.

Exactly. the drivers make way too much money to risk losing their job over a box of beer.

So UPS has never had a legit theft claim filed against them? Hard to believe. Might not be the norm, but I doubt all the classless buffoons in the shipping industry work for everyone but Brown.
