IPA Suggestions

I wanted to brew a good IPA. Iím looking for some input on IPA Extract kits who makes a good one?

Try steeping some grains if possible. LME and DME donít quite harness a true malt character irrespective of use. Use a fresh as hop supplier, even with pellets making sure your Homebrew supplier holds them with respect, keeping them chilled and airtight. Watch your water, ensure your liquor is adequate for the style (check with your local water supply if needed, otherwise boil and cool). Good quality yeast and making a yeast starter wouldnít hurt. Then some hops - well depends on what is available to you. Use of Chinook or any high alpha for long boil. Use of noble hops 15 minutes to the end I personally like and then dump some hybrid US hops in there as dry hops, or prior to chilling. Cool the wort rapidly but donít aerate when hot. Lastly make sure everything from hoses to spigots to fermentation bins are sterilised. Aside from that make it you IPA, to your taste!!!

To answer your question directly, I donít know who makes a good IPA kit.

However, if you want to make an extract IPA, it is pretty easy. It just depends on what kind of IPA you want to make. English? East Coast? West Coast? Once we know that, weíll be able to direct you a little better.

I had great success just looking up extract clone recipes of different IPAs that I enjoy and using that as a starting point for a recipe.

Now for the part on which a lot of people will disagree.

For a standard IPA, I recommend using a lb. of hops total, so with 1 oz. for bittering I would use 9 oz. at flame out and another 6 oz. for dry hop. I like mixing varietals to get a full spectrum of flavors and aromas. The combination that I REALLY like is Centennial, Amarillo, and Citra.

I agree and Ive found that most kits and recipes skimp on the flameout/dry hops. Especially if you are going extract where the malt character isnt there you really want to ramp up the flameout/dry hops. The last one that I made was Warrior for bittering and then 2oz nelson, 2 oz jade, 2 oz galaxy at flameout and 2 oz citra, 2 oz galaxy dry hopped for 5 days. Absolutely delicious.
