Just typing my backlog I came across a beer with a gimick that sometimes works brilliantly, sometimes is a complete abomination, but very rarely is just "meh?". And of all gimicks - be it an ingredient, process/preparation, or style - this is probably the most divisive for me. |
Bourbon Barrel here; for me it really either adds some truly meaningful element, or makes the beer into an overly boozy mess. Very rarely do I feel lukewarm about them. |
I was going to give a few of my runners-up, and bourbon barrel probably comes in 2nd or 3rd. I’m glad someone else volunteered it - thanks! |
Smoked malt. |
Barrel Aged, Coffee, Vanilla and Coconut. Extra points if all are together in one beer. |
Blueberry sours. |
Ginger. Can be lovely if combined with the right spices, additives and/or malt, but sometimes it’s really annoying or even nasty. |
Me, lots of shades of grey. |
Barrel aged beers for certain. |
Originally posted by MarcoDL +1 Chili. Also gruut/gruit. Often promises no holds barred exotics and then is a caramalt mint syrup mess. |
Originally posted by FatPhil I used to be big on bourbon barrel aging until everyone did 25 takes on the same thing. These days it is grapefruit and hot peppers (like jalepeno). I always go in expecting the worst but sometimes a brewery manages to make them taste better than liquid burning. |
