I’m headed there myself in a couple months. First time to Europe actually. A corporate trip with only limited free time. I know about the brewpub and hope to make a run down there, but as my first chance to buy any bottled beer in Europe I was wondering about the specifics about the retail market there. I see the grocery store has some, but I was wondering about corner stores, or would they only have wine if they even exist? Also interested in what kind of stuff to expect? Euro-lagers, mostly I suspect, but hoping to find any beer not commonly available in Canada/New England. Lastly, is it all sold in six packs of bottles, or cans, or is there any place to buy any kind of single?

As I said - you have a 0-24 supermarket (called Casino) maybe 20 meters from the brewpub, on the main street.

I’m quite sure that you’ll be able to find a variety of styles, though don’t expect (m)any IPAs and such - typical Euro stuff, Belgians etc. And yes, you’ll be able to find singles easily in there, especially 0.5l and 0.75l bottles. Some beers might be available in 3-, 4-, etc. packs, but far from all if I remember correctly.

Back from my trip, it was a modest success, beer-wise. Brew pub was as drescribed. Three taps, most customers were drinking wine or tequilla. Got my three Monaco ticks, though. Grocery stores had a number of singles, mostly in 500ml cans. Casino store down near the waterfront had more French and Belgian market singles and I even managed to grab a Faro lambic. The Marché U up on Boulevard Princesse Charlotte was a pleasant surprise with a shelf of 12 oz craft beer and import bottles, mostly from the UK and USA. Brew Dog and Flying Dog stood out. Managed to find a lager from Tahiti, too, and get another country tick. Bars and restuarants were kind of a waste. Expensive and mostly Heiniken or Monaco lager (also by Heiniken France, big brewery in Nice must supply the area). So beer is available, even rare stuff or craft, and in stores it is not expensive and sometimes cold.

Oooh, nice catch, we missed that Marché U, looking at the map, we probably passed 20 meters from there and didn’t see it, damn. Though it WAS in 2009 so who knows.

Well, now we probably have everything there is to know about beer in Monaco in one place! :)
