Quick 6-day trip, arriving in Munich on a Wednesday morning, leave the following Tuesday morning. Obviously a LOT of choices in the Munich to Bamberg range -- what are your votes for "MUST STOPS"?

Munich is an easy one. Just look at the best rated places. Some less known places are Union Brau, Das Bierlaboratorium (only open Saturday mornings its a very different place)

Nurnberg is the Altstadthof for the best one. There are other places as well.

Bamberg well Café Abseits is really good since a lot of the local beers are there. It is great if you do not have time to do a tour of the city. The rest of the great places are listed.

I would say that Nürnberg is barely worth a stop at all. Bamberg, OTOH, is brilliant. München ist Scheiße, though I don’t know the two Bierkrug has listed. He’s right on about Bamberg’s places too.

Agree with Erlangernick on the Nurnberg places but for an American it is a wonderful city to visit. Munich is the same and has some fantastic beer halls again something new for an American. Bamberg has the best beers by a long shot but you should see all three cities if you have a chance. Being an Ex-Ami I understand what they want to find here.

Danke! Beer indeed is only one reason for the visit. Having lived in Germany several years when I was younger, I somehow never made it to Nurnberg or Bamberg, and just had the desire for a Weinachtsmarkt this year! Also plan on visiting Regensberg, spend most of our time near Bamberg.

Good points, I was thinking only of beer. Perspective changes when you’ve lived here, too.

The Nürnberger Weihnachtsmarkt is pretty spectacular, but for me, once is enough.

My input would be Hutt’n in Nuremburg as the only really logical choice for a beer bar. The brewpubs in that town disappointed me. But get the Nurnberger sausage.

Bamberg obviously you don’t need to leave town, but I personally recommend people do. There’s some good places just outside town that can be reached easily on public transit as well (Memmelsdorf, Drosendorf, Bischberg, Merkendorf, Schammelsdorf) with about 7 breweries between them, all really good.

Oh, and just past Drosendorf a couple of km is the outlet for Andreas Gaenstaller’s brewery:http://www.ratebeer.com/Place/bavaria/schesslitz-strassgiech/zoiglstube-drei-kronen/20180.htm

To me that’s a can’t miss. And it only costs about €25 from Memmelsdorf to Schlenkerla by taxi if you miss the last bus. Well worth it. I would very much recommend a day in Memmelsdorf, Merkendorf, Drosendorf and Gaenstaller Braeu. The bocks out there are awesome (Hohn & Goeller especially).

Abseits is cool, and its late hours make a natural finisher.

There’s some other places that are quick train rides from Bamberg, too. Hirschaid (Brauerei Kraus) would probably be my first choice of those), although Brauerei Wichert in Lichtenfels is also really good.

And on the train get a Bayern Ticket if you’re going any distance at all. I think it pays for itself just going from Munich to Nuremberg.

Good points, Oakes. I specifically didn’t mention Hütt’n because it seems nearly impossible to get in there: the place has been heaving every time I’ve been in in the last few years. And that they play coy with who makes the one or two (?) house beers for them pisses me off.

A Nürnberg visit would also have to include some of the Landbierparadies outlets, though there’s normally only one Fassbier at each place, a rotating gravity pour (bayerischer Anstich) cask on the bar from small countryside breweries. Kind of sterile compared to countryside or Altstadt places though.

I normally don’t care for the Altstadthof in Nürnberg either, but for first-timers, it is a pretty cool place and fairly rare for a brewery here: more than one or two beers on tap!

Griess and Krug in Geisfeld are also doable by bus, and then there’s also Forchheim.

Skip Erlangen though!

Thought they only open at 17.00! Ah, I see it’s from 16.00 during the week now.http://www.huettn-nuernberg.de/wordpress/?page_id=145

Where’d you get the info about train tickets? IME that’s not at all true about 1-way vs. return (unlike say, in the UK), unless you mean a Länderticket or something.
