Hi I’m John (jjsint), been rating for a few months (although my profile is from 2010/11 as I rated one beer way back...) Originally from Florida but I’ve liked in the UK since 1997.

Just a few questions that I’ve been wondering about.

1. Where are the majority of posters from? Seems very US-based. I’m a real ale lover (although I like most beer) and I can’t help but notice that a lot of the UK ales seem to be rated quite low.

2. What’s with non-beer beverages being classed in the Beer Styles? Cider, Perry, Sake and Mead? Doesn’t bother me but just curious as to the philosophy behind this.

Anyway see you on the site & happy drinking!

"As a rule", it seems most beers that are ultra-balanced and conservative don’t get the highest ratings. You will rarely find a very high rated pale lager or kolsch but Impy stouts get stellar scores. The high ratings tend to favor big flavor.

In that vein, most UK ales are fairly reserved (as are the noble hop profiles) whereas US ales go bigger and hoppier.

It’s sensationalism at its finest.

Look for high style percentages for such beers. The good ones fare well.

Worry about style scores, not overall. In general, the masses public has spoken that coffee and chocolate are more universally enjoyable than hops or sour or creamy cask mouthfeel.

You may be surprised to find a greater international audience on RateBeer.com than other beer review websites.

Welcome!

Thanks everyone. I have to say that I do like the ’feel’ of RateBeer. I also do like the fact that it’s US-led which keep me up to date with goings-on over the pond.
