ELP.Something has happened to the old taste buds. For some reason big hop beers taste horrible to meunamused. I noticed earlier last week than I tried some of my favorites, Kuhnhenns ipa and hopslam and few other less hoppy beers to see if it was too much hops but that wasn’t it they all had a harsh, rough taste to them. Anybody else go through this? If so how long did it take to get that hop loving taste back?

I find I can’t take the big hoppy beers if I’m feeling very tired, run down, or recovering from an illness - the acidity tends to dominate and it feels like my tongue is being stripped off (Oddly I like sours a lot under those circumstances). I just avoid the hoppy beers for 4-5 days and make sure I’m well hydrated when I try one for the first time after a hiatus.

I doubt it will prove permanent - maybe drink impy stouts instead for a week --- although I hear those bastards are actually poorly made and hiding taste, character and composition flaws. Always, apparently ... amotivational syndrome

You hit the nail on the head Harry. I was really sick the last few weeks and my girlfriend was drinking a Stone IPA. I took a taste and I was disgusted and I started to wonder why. Here is what I think:

The reason why the mouth senses bitterness in the way it does is because when people were hunters and gathers the bitter taste was a natural sort of warning that something was either poisonous or inedible. My guess is that when you are sick or feeling run down you body amplifies this warning response as a defense mechanism to proctect you. This makes extremly hoppy of bitter things taste horrible to a beer lover.

good theory. My brother and I were out on the ocean in choppy seas drinking elissa IPA and he got a little sea sick. He still hates hoppy beers. Not sure if that’s the same thing but I think the green hops got to him.

Thanks. I am tired but no sickness. I guess I will lay off the hops for a while 5/12/2008 8:41:57 PM

I made the mistake of eating a hop pellet when homebrewing once, and after that I couldn’t drink really hoppy beers for more than a year. It was disgusting.

Now that I’m in a country where really hoppy beers (by US standards) are a rarity, I find myself craving them often.
