Places Update Required?

The other post re the usefulness of the current form of the Places dbase highlighted to me that the Australian Places dbase (well at least Vic) is still a bit of a mess. I use offshore dbases A LOT when planning holidays but there is no way I could use the Melbourne one with confidence. Still instances of completely crap shops being entered and more recently some bullshit spam.

Does anyone know who I can direct suggested amendments too? Olso? Would be happy to post suggestions first...........

theres the ’edit this place’ option, or do you mean deleting places totally? that would be in feedback i guess...

I can possibly help you out. What are your suggestions? Also, while we are talking about places in Australia, how would people feel about Australian cities in the places section being separated by state? Not that I’m saying it is going to happen, but I just would like to know whether people would like to see that done.

1. I like the idea of States/ Capital city/ outside. It might work less well for NSW and WA.

2. I had a thread a while ago where I moved a few things and saw some things that might be deleted. See here. More suburban things that belong in Melbourne have since been added (under Armadale, Bundoora, Collingwood, Richmond and Ringwood).

3. At minimum, anything that has no beers available and no review should go. A quick list of stuff that I think would be uncontroversial deletions:

The East Brighton Dan Murphy
Both Bundoora listings
Corner Hotel Richmond
(Listed under Melbourne)
Beers Direct/ Maresias Beverages (the same post office box for 2 nothings)
Deco Wine Bar
Liquorland (downmarket for a chain)
MoVida (good place, but not a beer place)
Red, White & Amber (nice shop, almost no beer)
Rue Bar
Skinny Dog

Other
LambsGo Bar has closed
Doc’s Liquor Ringwood - if it’s as good as the one in Balwyn, it probably deserves to stay given its location in the outer ’burbs (and be merged so its main listing is for Ringwood)
Josie Bones hasn’t much there at present but probably will soon and should stay.

Even that pruning leaves a lot of fairly dodgy-sounding places.

4. The Melbourne Beer Tour link is quite outdated and needs to be completely revamped.

I’m all for this. But as I mentioned in the other thread, it needs to be made clear that the Places section is for interesting beer places only, not anywhere you buy a beer and then rate. I suspect these places will just keep popping back up.

Agree with all Hawthorne’s suggestions on the Melbourne clean-up. may I also suggest:

1) Armadale / The Orchard: delete as this is spam.

2) Geelong / Irish Murphys: delete - crap Irish theme bar

3) Melbourne / Decanters: delete - standard bottle ’o with nothing special.

4) Melbourne / Duncan’s on Church: as per (4).

5) Melbourne / Mrs Parmas: delete the dupe.

6) Melbourne / Rue Bar: not craft focussed at all - delete

7) Melbourne / Charles Dickens: as per (6).

8) Melbourne / Vintage Cellars: as per (6). Crap fine wine chain with little beer focus.

9) Woodend / Holgate: entries need to be amalgamated.

How do you define interesting? Once you’ve done that, I think it should include any place you can buy interesting beer.

A place which you would recommend to a fellow beer-lover who was visiting from out of town, because that’s who uses the Places section.

(To use a Melbourne example) I could send them to eight different bottle shops which have a decent selection, or I could just send them to Purvis or Slowbeer and save them the hassle. They might not find that obscure Spanish dark lager, but they will have found the best of what’s available here.

One-stop-shopping and interesting are two different things. I’m more inclined to believe you’re being facetious rather than truly suggesting that only two bottle shops in the whole of Melbourne should be listed, but if I’m wrong that’s just ridiculous.

Anyway as far as guiding travelling beer lovers, that’s what the rating system is for. If something’s relevant it should be listed, and the "interesting" places will no doubt attract better ratings.
