as anyone ever tried a beer off on of these? Is it just a gimmick or does it add a lot of hoppiness to the beer?

I once had the festina peche through one, though it was filled with blackberries rather than hops. It was nice, but I believe more gimmicky than anything. have yet to try an IPA through one with hops.

I’ve had a few beers that were ran through one, it added more to the nose than the flavor of the beer but it was worth trying.

If you put enough hops in in the first place you would’nt need this contraption!

Gimmick... I personally think that running IPAs through a randall completely strips out the depth of flavors and bitterness. It might add a touch of hops to the aroma, but it just isn’t worth it. DFH popularized the randell fad with their 90 Minute (sometimes 60 too) through the randall. Totally a gimiick. I’ve had it that way a couple times and have been completely disappointed with the beer. A beer like that is just fine as it is.
On a side note, I have heard that Festina Peche through peaches is pretty good, but have never had it...
However, I have had Hoppin’ Frog BORIS the Crusher through coffee beans and it was fantastic. It picked up the perfect amount of coffee. After the brewer had experimented with this and also like the outcome, I thought for sure that we should see Coffee BORIS, but it has yet to come about.

I’ve had Festina Peche with Peaches and green apples. It was great. I think a good IPA is better with out the Randall.
Wonder if it makes a bad IPA better?

The first couple of beers (especially the first) pick up substantial fresh hop aromas, but the returns diminish very quickly for subsequent beers run through the same hops. I’ve had the first sample many times and even selected the hop variety a few times. Il Vicino in Albuquerque runs cask IPA through a Randall-type device before it reaches the hand pump.

I’ve had 120 minute and 90 minute through the Randall and prefer it over the the bottles.

i had an average at best amber ale pumped through a ’hop engine’ which was basically the same thing
it was filled with cascades but i thought it was obnoxious, it just tasted like raw plant matter and chlorophyll
maybe i had a rare/bad experience but this seems to me like something that is great in theory and poor in execution
previously i thought the idea of 60/90 min pumped through a tube of hops sounded awesome to me

Was that at Blue and Brews in Akron this year? I’m pretty sure Fred was pouring Silk Porter through the beans
As to the OP I’m going against the mainstream and saying its worth the try. As someone said about the first few pours are always the best ones. I’ve had Festina Peche with peaches and blueberries which was very good but I got one of the last pours so I’d imagine the first ones were better. I do have to say I LOVED 90 minute through Randall. I totally got why he’s called The Enamel Animal!
