Hello friends,
Last time in Germany I was overwhelmed by cigarette smoke at a few places. Has a ban been enforced as of late, or should I expect to encounter lots of cig smoke at places like Schlenkerla?
*fingers crossed that a ban has been implemented*
Thanks,
Jeff

Franconia is - even though the Franconians don’t want to speak about it - a part of the Bundesland of Bavaria. In this "Bundesland" smoking is - for God’s sake - completely banned from restaurants, bars, pubs and so on (public buildings, trains, hospitals, too, but that is understood). NO EXCEPTIONS ! Unfortunately You will not find these strict rules in other parts of Germany; too many exceptions....

yes it has been for a couple of years now. at some places you will still have to walk into a cloud of smoke in the Schwemme area to reach the toilets though. i was in Bamberg days before the ban and the difference was quite big. it’s much nicer since (i returned the following year the same time of year)! smoking ban in Germany: http://www.howtogermany.com/pages/nosmoking.html

Thank you! I was last there in October 2009, and while smoke was encountered at a place or two, it wasn’t nearly as bad as Czech Republic.

The first ban took effect in Jan 2008, was then subsequently weakened by the cowardly Bavarian state legislature, and then last year, a ballot initiative was passed by 61% of those who voted (can’t recall how high voter turnout was) which enacted the country’s strictest Rauchverbot, eliminating loopholes like turning a small bar into a "smoker’s club". It’s the greatest thing to have happened since we’ve been living here. It’s hard for me to think of traveling to other states in the country with their shitty, ineffective smoking bans. And I read in the paper that there was a court case that basically declared the purely-smoking places like shisha/hookah cafés and what not illegal, so those will have to shut down, I guess. OTOH, there are places around Bavaria where people still smoke, albeit illegally. I’ve seen statistics that show that while under 20% of Americans smoke, it’s nearly double that over here (see election results). This does have an effect: the tobacco lobby is much stronger.

Here in RP most bars still smoke if they do not serve food.

The section on Bavaria is out of date.
