As my quest continues to appreciate as many various beer styles as possible, I want to start looking at sours. My experience with sours thus far has been very limited and what I have tried I have not been a big fan.

I know from experience that sometimes it pays to learn to appreciate something new that initially you don’t understand. So my question is, could someone list a few sours that would be more for beginners? Also, could you list a progression of beers from lightly sour to very sour? Thanks,

Also Panil Barriquee and Rodenbach. Start with those. Good and easy to get ahold of.

+1
I highly doubt Rodenbach would be offensive to almost anyone; I’ve certainly never shared a bottle with a newbie who didn’t think that it drank pretty good.

Mort makes some very bland "lambic", some lambic flavours are there but are burried under sugar.

Lindeman’s Cuvee Rene is and excellent intro to gueuze. Definitely a "training wheel" lambic.

Not a huge sour fan myself, but I really liked Giradin Black Label.

I consider training wheel sours to be those that aren’t that sour, so I’d definitely stay away from Panil and Lindemans Cuvee Rene.

My #1 rec is always Duchesse De Bourgogne, it is unquestionable a traditional oud bruin but is lower in sourness and has a bit of a sugary sucrose character that balances things out without making the beer sweet. Their Echte Kriekenbeer would also beer good. Liefmans Goudenband is also in that traditional but not too sour vein.

If you want real lambic, I don’t think you can find a good example that has training wheels. You’ll have to just go for it, they are all very sour. The only two I’d recommend staying away from for your first would be Cantillon Gueuze and Oud Beersel, not because of sourness but just because of general flavor profile. Girardin Black, Lindemans, and Hanssens may be the most accessible, but I’d really encourage you to try the above Oud Bruins first.
