his will be my first attempt at formulating an IPA recipe on my own. Looking for suggestions.

60 min boil. Starting volume - 6.5 gals, ending volume - 5 gals

7lbs xlight DME
2lbs Cyrstal 10L
2 oz Chinook (11%) @ 60 mins
1 whirfloc tab @ 15 mins
2 oz Centennial (9.8%) @ 5 mins
2 oz Cascade (5.5 %) @ FO
2 oz Centennial DH
2 oz Cascade DH

Going to ferment with Safale US-05. I’m figuring roughly 1.066 SG and hoping to finish around 1.016 FG

Thoughts?

I would say 2lbs of crystal is a ton for that batch, it’d be about 20% of the bill. But that’s just me. 5/15/2008 12:15:15 PM

A pound max. I would go with a half pound. With extract and crystal malt you probably will have some residual sweetness. Personally, I like my IPA’s dry, so I would only use a half pound. Either way, it’s your beer so brew it how you want to! 5/15/2008 1:36:57 PM

I’d like to have it as dry as possible as well. I’m really looking for a way to add some body, flavor and color - without adding too much color.

For body, you can use carapils. It’s a dextrin malt that adds no flavor or color, just body and it helps in head retention. My advise would be to use a half pound of carapils and half pound of a light crystal, I like 40, and thats it. The extract and crystal will give you plenty of sweetness. 5/15/2008 2:13:04 PM

Thanks for the input. So I’ll adjust it to this:

7lbs xlight DME
1/2lbs Cyrstal 40L
1/2lbs Carapils
2 oz Chinook (11%) @ 60 mins
1 whirfloc tab @ 15 mins
2 oz Centennial (9.8%) @ 5 mins
2 oz Cascade (5.5 %) @ FO
2 oz Centennial DH
2 oz Cascade DH

Will the carapils also help with head formation/retention?

somebody suggested to me; toasted malts (Toast at 350) Until they have reddish hue. Use this instead of the crystal 5/15/2008 2:58:10 PM

Looks good to me and yes, the carapils will help in head formation/retention.

You could always get carafoam instead of carapils. That US-05 will tear through your wort. I don’t think you’ll end up anywhere near 1.016, but I think that is a good thing. 5/15/2008 4:33:20 PM
