’ve booked my Switzerland itinerary for next month:
Geneva-Lucerne-Lausanne-Geneva.
Any pub recommendations? I presume there might be more options in German-speaking Lucerne.
Also, tips for eating out cheaply. I downloaded a menu from Rathaus Brauerei, Lucerne. The prices are a lot higher compared to identical meals in a brewpub in Germany or Austria, say.
I suppose I’ll have to pig out at the breakfast buffet in the hotel, then.

hi,perhaps i am answering too late!
I am from lucerne, but i think that for finding good little bars and bistrots(nice little restaurants) with good beers your chance would be better in the french speaking part!
and some of the best beers in switzerland are from the french speaking part!for example : brasserie des franches montagnes in seignelegier(jura) or brasserie des 3 dames in ste.croix.
in lucerne it’s a plenty of places you can have good food, but if its for food and beer, then the rathausbrauerei might bee the only place(attention: not very cheap food)

sorry,it’s me again, i didn’t read your letter attentivli enough¨
You search for cheeper food? then, often, the french speaking part is better too.
for example in lausanne ,near the railway station is a little workers-restaurant, named code-bar, with not much choice, but good entrecôtes(beef-steaks) for only 18 swissfrancs(250 grams)
often you eat good and rather cheap in the restaurants that are directly in or at the railwaistations (buffet de la gare)
but here too, lucerne is not a good example the buffet in the 1 floor is expensive.
a good little restaurant is the bistrot du theatre near the citys theatre, or the "nix in der laterne" (with alsacian food, like flams or that) but good and rather cheap ids the gastretto, with good meals, and very good sweets, because its the restaurant of a bakery-scool! it’s in an outer quarter of the city, you have to take the bus nr 24 to the station seeburg(by the way ,most of meals can be taken as 1/2 portions and they have good daily menus during the week.

Thank you,
I did make it Lucerne. The town is in a lovely setting near the lake and overlooked by mountains. But it is not a great beer place. The Rathaus Brauerei helles was pretty good, at 7.10 CHF for a pint. Better than the Geneva brew pubs, in my opinion. Eichof beer is everywhere. This is an average euro-lager.
For cheap meals in Switzerland, the best option is the Manor department stores. Freshly cooked main meal, juice and dessert was 17 to 20 CHF. Otherwise, the best option is to look out for menu de jour/tagesmenu.

hy, pleased to know that you liked my birthtown of lucerne!
i not like much the manor food, but with the dayly menu/plat du jour you are right, thats often cheap and a lot of food for not much monney (not only at manor but in many swiss restaurants)

Mike,

How did you like Switzerland? Did you ski or just tour? The wife and I are thinking about France / Switzerland combo vacation next March. Was it any cheaper in Switzerland compared to countries on the Euro?

Thanks! BeerMail me if you want...

Switzerland is more expensive than it’s neighbouring European countries. Especially for hotels in the main Swiss towns.
I’m not a skier or hill walker. But Switzerland is superb for these, so I understand.
