So your best meal of the month was non-sushi at a sushi place...or am I just reading this wrong?

More for the environment that the food, more than a few days of MRE’s under field conditions... Pinnacle Peak in Tucson Arizona, one Big Cowboy plus all the sides among Brothers in Arms. Yep, a moment unmatched to this day.

2nd best, this MASSIVE rainbow trout served on a simple bed of Spätzle with a lemon cream sauce and the side was a simple green (but well seasoned) salad. oh, German Hefeweizen fresh on tap.

By far the best thing I have ever ate.

Same thing. This dish was insane.

I’m interested to try that lavender, whatever it is. I don’t think I ever had lavender. I do remember a Bizarre Foods (I think it was Bizarre Foods), the host went to some lavender farm and had multiple lavender dishes. I use to only think of lavender as a hand lotion ingredient!

I brewed a lavender IPA a few years ago - it was surprisingly good.

Week:

Tonight we hit a local Italian restaurant. It was the first good Italian meal that was more than pizza I’ve had outside of NY or Italy. I had an escarole and bean soup, mixed greens with house made creamy Italian Buffalo mozzarella dressing, broccoli rabe with garlic and sausage, ravioli, and grilled marinated swordfish.

Month:

Sashimi at an excellent local Japanese restaurant

Year:

Tough call. Probably the 5 course dinner I had at a very non-descript Vietnamese restaurant in Albany.

I don’t get to eat out nice places very often...too many kids and I am a cheap bastard.

I made lamb with prunes and apricots with ethiopian spices over cous cous last week that ate pretty good.

I had a pretty good lamb rogan josh at a place in murray hill in NYC a few months back.

I had Charcuterie at a brew pub in cleveland, next to the market there on the west side, that was surprisingly good. I also had a decent italian meal in cleveland, although his soups sucked.

The best meal of all time was at restaurant million in SC in the 90s...foi gras was amazing and they had this lobster with a tomato glaze that was perfection on a plate. Truely one of the best experiences of my life that didn’t involve sex.

I suspect that anyone who cooks well, and doesn’t live near a big city, finds if difficult to eat out. Over the past few years the best meals have all been right at my dining room with usually 10-12 people. We are a loud boisterous clan and when the word gets out that I am cooking dinner the teenaged boys virtually crawl out of the woodwork.

BBB is on to something with atmosphere though. I remember once when we forgot the salt on a 7 day hike, and on day 6 we made soup out of that soup starter stuff and dried beef. It tasted like heaven. My climbing buddy tried to make the same soup again when we weren’t sodium deprived and it was inedible.

There have been times in life that I would swear a tomato picked from the vine and sprinkled with a bit of salt and pepper was proof that God exists

I’m a chef and have lead quite a few kitchens but can’t for the life of me think of the best dish I have ever tried. Lately I’ve returned to my ol’ friend the pork belly and two dishes pumped out of a kitchen in Perth’s northern suburbs have left me well impressed. I simply have to try pork belly when it’s on the menu anywhere I go, an old favourite!
