o I’ve heard a lot about how to get hold of Westvleteren beer. most of it consists of a) needing a car, b) calling ahead and providing a license plate and c)lining up outside of the abbey on certain days to get the beer.

We are going to be renting a car to travel through the countryside and so this may be possible but were wondering from those of you who have gotten beer what the drill is.

Thanks.

If you want to get it at the abbey in large quantities then you need to call ahead (1 week or so). You can chance it and go to the cafe next to the abbey and get the beer fresh on tap and score a 6 pack if you are lucky. (I scored a 6 pack of 8 two weeks ago). They limit it to one six pack per person.

You can also find Westy at some establishments throughout the country (Belgium).

Just to clarify, the beer in the café isn’t fresh on tap. But it is relatively fresh from bottles.

Here’s the drill for ordering: First you call the beer phone, +32 (0)70 210045. From that you figure out what day the next reservation period starts, what beer will be available, and what’s the limit per car (usually two or three cases).

On the day the reservation period starts, or within the next couple of days after that, you must call the same number between 9 a.m. and noon local time. It will be busy, so you must do two things: (1) Hit redial over and over and over as quickly as you can manage, and (2) be patient. It will take a while to get through.

When you get through, simply make our reservation. The fellow on the other end does speak English.

Good luck.

My mistake, you are correct of course, what I really meant to say is that you can order by glass.

they give you up to two sixers at the Vrede. Yes, you’ll need a car. 5/12/2008 12:40:02 PM

When I was at the cafe a little less than 2 months ago they let you get 1 six pack of the Blonde and 1 six pack of the 8. No 12 was available at that time but that changes from time to time.

There are times when the cafe is not open but I am not sure exactly what that is. I drove by on Friday and they were closed. Maybe due to the holiday.

When I was there a month ago, you could get bottles to drink in the cafe, but that was it. There was nothing available to take away.

I wish you better luck!

i’m not sure how, but i have a buddy over there that seems to be able to get cases of whatever whenever.

i know that sounds odd, but i have never contacted him when he was not able to get them.

He must live near enough to be able to get there for appointments for what he wants when they are available. I have had luck getting cases once before and another time I got through to the live person but the only appointment they had left was on a day when I could not get there.
